Title: Papers, 1914-1919

The Grant S. Youmans Papers consist of two books written by Youmans. The first, published in 1914 and entitled Legalized Bank Robbery, concerns the trouble he had with his Minot banking business due to his support for Socialist causes. Justice Held for Ransom, written in 1919, is an outgrowth of his attempts to obtain justice for what he perceived as the crimes against him. This book discusses his experiences with S.G. Severtson, as well as A.C. Townley. Both titles are important works for an understanding of the flux and nature of radicalism in North Dakota. Also included is a full page newspaper ad taken out by Youmans in the Minot Daily News on August 3, 1918. In this ad Youmans discusses the same themes he espoused in his two books.The first addition to the Grant S. Youmans Papers consists of two photocopied items. The first is a 1919 pamphlet photocopied from the holdings of the Minnesota Historical Society. The pamphlet is entitled "Townley and Youmans: the farmers want to know the truth about this Townley-Youmans incident. The farmers would like to know who is the crook! Dare you tell them Mr. Townley?" The pamphlet regards the controversy surrounding the alleged bribe offered by Townley to Youmans. Also included is a photocopy of Youmans' published family history, The Yeamans-Yeomans- Youmans Genealogy. The book was originally published in 1946.

Other papers concern Minnesota politics and Gilbert's unsuccessful campaign for Congress as the Farmer-Labor candidate from the fifth district (1942), and the 1944 presidential election.

Title: Arthur B. Gilbert papers, 1909-1967.

Correspondence and subject files of a Minneapolis-based farm activist, political gadfly, and self-described agitator for legislation to help the farmer, particularly for a protective tariff on agricultural imports. Gilbert was on the staff of the National Nonpartisan League from 1917 to 1924; after becoming disillusioned with that organization (particularly as it came increasingly under the influence of labor interests), he supported Republican candidates for state and national office as being most in sympathy with farming interests. From 1928 to 1930 he was an advocate of The Minnesota Plan of Farm Relief, a legislative agenda calling for various measures to make American farm products more competitive, to encourage domestic production and to discourage agricultural imports, and to improve farmers' profits while at the same time reducing costs to consumers. Gilbert was staunchly anti-communist, and viewed Minnesota's Farmer-Labor party and its leaders with grave suspicion.

There is also congratulatory letters to Paulson on the Fargo Forum newspaper receiving the Pulitzer Prize in 1958 for its coverage of the Fargo tornado of 1957.
