Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

She also relates the profound influence of recordings of Weill's Dreigroschenoper on her in her youth. In her recollections of Venus, she pays special attention to Agnes DeMille and Mary Martin.

Richard Rodgers papers 1914-1989
The Richard Rodgers Papers consist of correspondence, photographs, posters, newspaper clippings, and other material related to the career of Richard Rodgers. There is a small series of production files which includes materials on THE KING AND I, SOUTH PACIFIC and OKLAHOMA! The primary strength of the collection lies in the inclusiveness of the business correspondence; there are both complimentary and uncomplimentary letters, indicating that Rodgers did not edit the collection to eliminate unfavorable information. Another strength of the collection lies in the amount of correspondence with his collaborators, particularly Oscar Hammerstein II. There is, however, no direct correspondence between Rodgers and his first collaborator Lorenz Hart and there are few references to Hart. Although there are a considerable amount of letters from Rodgers to his wife, there are very few from her to him. There is also a small amount of correspondence related to Dorothy Rodgers political and literary activities.

An oral history interview with Ben Cutler / conducted for the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music by Dennis Jones, 1988 December 16 : recording and transcript.
Cutler discussses the two Kurt Weill shows he participated in: The eternal road and One touch of Venus. He recalls the preparations for the Eternal road with regard to scenery, rehearsal, and music, and explains the roles of Weill, Max Reinhardt, Isaac van Grove, and Lotte Lenya in the production. He has a different perspective on One touch of Venus, which he entered in mid-run, and he recalls his difficulties fitting into the cast, along with his work with Elia Kazan and Mary Martin.
