This collection contains indexes to three Philadelphia newspapers: the Pennsylvania Packet, 1775-1776, the Pennsylvania Mercury and Universal Advertiser, 1788-1789, and the Gazette of the United States, 1790-1792. The Gazette of the United States was published first in New York from 1789 to 1790, when it was moved to Philadelphia by staunch Federalist John Fenno (1751-1798). In 1793 the newspaper was changed from a semi-weekly to a daily publication titled Gazette of the United States and Evening Advertiser. Following Fenno's death in 1798, his son John Ward Fenno (1778-1802) served as publisher for a short time. In 1804 Enos Bronson (1774-1823), the publication's new owner, changed the title of the newspaper to the United States Gazette. The Pennsylvania Mercury and Universal Advertiser was established in 1784 by Daniel Humphreys (1753-1812). It became a tri-weekly publication in 1788 and was discontinued in 1792. The Pennsylvania Packet was established in 1771 by John Dunlap (1747-1812). In 1773 it became Dunlap's Pennsylvania Packet or, The General Advertiser. In 1791 the title was changed to Dunlap's American Daily Advertiser. The publication was moved to Lancaster during the British occupation of Philadelphia, 1777-1778. The index to the Gazette of the United States may have been prepared by D. Winchester ( - ). All three indexes contain several alphabetized lists of subjects or titles of specific articles, accompanied by the issue and column numbers. There are two such general lists of articles, e.g., obituaries, marriages, anecdotes, for the indexes to the Gazette and the Packet. The volumes also contain separate lists for Poetry (by title), articles concerning Congressional Events, Appointments, Accidental Occurrences, and Pennsylvania Laws enacted. There are also lists of "Senators in the Continental Senate," "Acts of Congress," Congressional debates, lists of anecdotes and federal appointments. The Gazette index contains a list of medicinal cures, and the Packet index includes resolutions of the Second Continental Congress, "Proceedings of the respective states," and Custom House entries.

States he has not received an answer from the Secretary of Congress, nor from the President, nor has he received a reply from Chevalier de La Luzerne. Requests newspapers from [John] Dunlap for June, July and August, as well as the journals of Congress for those months.
