Papers consist of correspondence, 1856-1867, including letters, 1856-1858, from Robert Balmanno of N.Y. about books and literary matters; correspondence with Sir Patrick Colquhoun, Ewing P. Colquhoun, C.H. Hutchinson of Philadelphia, and others about the collection of dividends from Patrick Colquhoun's shares of stock in the North American Land Co.; the collection of rents from land in Steuben and Allegheny counties, N.Y.; the transmission of funds to England; investments in stock of the New York Central Railroad and the Western Railroad Corporation of Massachusetts during the Civil War when the exchange rate between the U.S. and England was very high; the forwarding of bonds to Reverend Robert Cunningham of St. Ranraer, Scotland. Also includes accounts, 1854-1865; powers of attorney, receipts, certificates, etc., 1858-1867, bearing on Jeffrey's agency of the Colquhoun estate; papers, 1867-1876, regarding the administration of the estate of William Jeffrey in which his brothers, Alexander and John Jeffrey, were executors; and a prospectus for The Pen and Pencil by Mary Balmanno.

Title: Elizabeth Fries Ellet papers 1838-1858

Elizabeth Fries Ellet (1818-1877) was an American writer, historian and poet. She is remembered as the first writer to record the lives of women who contributed to the American Revolutionary War. The papers consist predominantly of letters written between 1838-1858, and additional undated letters. Letters are both personal and professional in nature, with many relating to her work on The Women of the American Revolution. Also included is a draft or alternate version of her poem Sodus Bay, and undated notes relating to publications

All letters are to Thomas Francis Dillon Croker except for (4) which is to Mrs. Crofton Croker. (1) Regarding the selling of the Shakespeare ring and other questions regarding Croker family Shakespeare memorabilia; (2) Regarding Mr. Ridfeld's draft for £45 pounds for "750 copies of Extracts from Moore's letters," Shakespeare items relating to Croker's "dear father" (mulberry block, whistle), and other details; (3) Regarding delivery of a letter from Croker's father and an introduction to Mrs. Degen. Includes integral 2nd letter dated October 28, 1854, from Maria Degan to Croker about Croker's father's collection of relics; (4) Addressed to Mrs. Crofton Croker offering condolences on the death of Mr. Croker. Mentions Mary Balmanno's poem to Croker on his acquisition of the Shakespeare Gimmel ring (see PS1059.B76 L7). Requests a picture of Mr. Croker; (5) Offering condolences on the death of his mother and discussing a portrait of her husband. Mentions Coriolanus, Harriet Beecher Stowe and her husband and son, Mr. Bradbury (the proprietor of Punch), Charles and Maria Degen, Mrs. Balmanno, Dr. Kane and the Grinnell Arctic Expedition, the remains of Sir John Franklin, Sir Edward Belcher. Describes how to send the mulberry when it is found; (6) Regarding portrait made by T. F. Dillon Croker of Thomas Croker (for Mrs. Balmanno's work) and a request regarding contacting Mr. Bradbury. Assumes that Lord Londesborough will purchase the Shakespeare ring. Awaits the catalogue of his father's collection; (7) Regarding renewed contact with Mr. Bradbury and a portrait of Croker's aunt. Expresses horror at the low price that Croker has set for the Shakespeare ring, and implores Croker to bid on it for him. With lengthy postscript regarding Croker family Shakespeare memorabilia and its current whereabouts. Postscript about the Degens and the Shakespeare ring; (8) Regarding the portrait of Croker's father and Mrs. Balmanno's volume, The Pen and Pencil. The case and catalogue arrived safely. Thanks him for the mulberry piece.

Includes 100 letters from Mary Cowden Clarke to Robert Balmanno, many addressed "My dear Enthusiast & Father-in-love." Also includes 7 letters to Mrs. Balmanno, and several by other persons, all connected with Mrs. Clarke: William Thompson to G.P. Putnam (3), J. Alfred Novello to Robert Balmanno (6, 34, 35, 97), Mary Sabilla Novello to Robert Balmanno (13, 24), Charles Cowden Clarke to Robert Balmanno (59, 120, 132), and Elizabeth F. Bosanquet to Anne C. Nettleton concerning Florence Nightingale and Mrs. Clarke (144)). Also several printed sheets, copy of a poem addressed to Mrs. Clarke, in her hand ("Fair vot'ress at Shakespeare's shrine" (135)), and an autobiographical memoir in her autograph (136). Several items concern the Testimonial Chair presented to Mary Cowden Clarke her by Abott Lawrence in January 1852: an autograph letter signed from Abbott Lawrence to Robert Balmanno (137) and copies of three letters between Lawrence and Mrs. Cowden-Clarke (138) and a printed copy of the inscription on the chair (139).

Renwick family. Renwick Family papers, 1794-1916.

Title: Renwick Family papers, 1794-1916.

This collection is primarily concerned with Prof. James Renwick and his professional correspondence and papers, both as Professor of Natural Philosophy (Physics) at Columbia College and as a leading engineer. Many certificates of membership in honorary societies are included. There are letters from Washington Irving (1783-1859) to Prof. Renwick and to his mother, pertaining to contemporary events and Irving's own activities. The letters to Mrs. Renwick are about the travels and experiences of Irving and Renwick abroad. The collection also covers the affairs of the Prof. Renwick's grandfather, including documents concerning his land grants in New York State, and those of James Armstrong Renwick, including his valedictory address at Columbia College in 1876 and his class reunion in 1916. There are many legal documents, letters, and manuscripts of various members of the Renwick and Brevoort families; among these are Prof. Renwick's notes on his family genealogy and a memoir of Jane Jeffrey Renwick. Correspondents include Clement Clarke Moore, John A. Dix, Martin Van Buren, Secretary of State John Forsyth, and Secretary of the Navy James K. Paulding. There is one letter from Sir Edward Sabine (1788-1883), President of the Royal Society, giving his views on the American Civil War. Also there is one volume of 70 watercolor sketches by Prof. Renwick and two by Washington Irving; one bundle of oversized documents including deeds, mortgage, and a military appointment; and a case containing Prof. Renwick's lecture notes. 1994 Addition: Correspondence of James Renwick (1818-1895), the celebrated architect. There are 68 letters to his brother, Edward Sabine Renwick (1823-1912), inventor and patent expert, concerning his collecting, investments, and health. There are 19 letters to his nephew, Edward Brevoort Renwick (b.1863), concerning the construction of his yacht, "Jean", with replies and related correspondence. There are also 2 letters to Edward S. Renwick from his sister, Laura K. R. Monroe.

This file consists of letters relating to the history and authenticity of a block of mulberry wood that supposedly came from a tree planted by Shakespeare. This block is now in the Horace Howard Furness Memorial Library. The file was originally assembled by Horace Howar Furness, though it also contains a few related items that were added much later.
