Title: Papers of George Julian Pratt, 1861-1905.

The collection consists chiefly of letters written by Pratt to his parents in Charlottesville, Va. Pratt discusses his service with the "University Volunteers" (Company G, 59th Virginia) commenting on the campaign at Gauley Bridge and camp life. Letters from his service with the 18th Virginia Cavalry mention the Gettysburg Campaign, serving on a court martial, a skirmish that took 53 prisoners and his desire to follow Lee across the Rio Grande rather than surrender. Of interest are letters from Early's campaign against Sheridan in the fall of1864 particularly battles at Bunker Hill and Winchester. A hand sketched map of the Shenandoah Valley from Luray to Front Royal is included. With Pratt's correspondence are a letter from company commander Frank Imboden, December 1863, on difficulties keeping the troops together; three letters of recommendation for Pratt; a letter from the mother of Lt. Monroe Blue seeking help locating his body and bringing it home; letters from his friend Charlie Harmon; an April 9, 1865, order from William L. Jackson to burn a railroad bridge near Lynchburg; letters from young ladies Pratt was courting including his future wife Mary E. "Mollie" Brown; and a poem from Pratt to Brown. Topics in newsclippings include soldiers' complaints about furloughs, the death of Lt. Monroe Blue, and obituary for "Mollie" Brown Pratt. Miscellaneous items include United Confederate Veterans and Louisiana Purchase Exposition envelopes; Confederate stamps; a miniature Confederate flag; and an 1875 stereograph of Pratt's prize calf with an African -American (farm hand?).
