Van Norden family papers 1867-1923
The progenitor of the Van Norden family in America was Pieter Casparszen Van Naerden who first appeared in the historical record in 1621 with other Huguenots and Walloons petitioning the British ambassador at the Hague for permission to emigrate to Virginia. Collection contains genealogical notes, history and sketches, mostly typescript, on members of the Van Norden and related families by Warner Van Norden, copies of wills, and a few marriage and death certificates, and personal papers of Warner's son Theodore L. Van Norden, mostly concerning a family financial scandal. The papers of Theodore Van Norden consist of manuscripts, correspondence, legal and financial papers and clippings pertaining to lawsuits against his brother and his wife as well as drawings, paper dolls, poems, stories by children, and a letter and telegram from Theodore Roosevelt.

Volumes contain manuscript and typescript copies, and some photocopies made by numerous genealogists from the records of New York State, primarily, churches and towns. Also, copies of records from churches and towns in New England, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere in the U.S. Information, dating from the 17th to the 20th century, consists very largely of records of births, deaths, and marriages. Also recorded are lists of church members, and records of baptisms, land records, and legal records. Of note are nine volumes of copies of records from Trinity Church in New York City. These record baptisms, 1749-1885, marriages, 1746-1886, and burials, 1777-1899. Lists of vaults and tombstones, including some from St. Paul's and St. John's Churches, are also included.

One album contains mid to late 19th century portrait photographs, largely studio portraits, in the form of cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and tintypes. Portraits are of unidentified men, women, and children, and a few celebrities including Abraham Lincoln, Tom Thumb and his wife, and actress Emma Waller. These were taken by photographers in Camden, Elizabeth, and Jersey City, N.J.; Long Island City, New York City, and Brooklyn, N.Y.; Washington D.C.; Pennsylvania; and possibly elsewhere. Of note are two portraits of black people, one of a young woman taken by a photograher in Elizabeth, N.J., and another of Samuel Math Francis, American-Sudan Mission, Freetown, Africa. Also of note are an advertisement for John Thompson & Co., a furniture manufacturer on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn; a business card of H.L. Bemis, General Electrician, of Glen Cove, Long Island; an advertisement for actress Emma Waller, ca. 1870s; a pamphlet from The Girls Friendly Society of America, located in New York City, 1893, announcing the death of General Secretary Letitia Townsend of Matinecock, Long Island from typhus at Riverside Hospital, North Brother Island, Queens, N.Y.

It documents the histories of approximately 2,000 families, mostly from New York State, with some from New England, New Jersey, and a few from elsewhere in the U.S. Also included among these files is a small amount of original 18th and 19th century family documents including correspondence, wills, deeds, and other legal documents, and photocopies of the family records that were inscribed in Bibles.

Genealogies in typescript form done by numerous genealogists from approximately the turn of the century to the 1960s. Some genealogies contain copies of 18th - 20th century letters, wills, deeds, clippings, photographs, and miscellaneous other family documents. Families are largely from New York State, although some from New England, elsewhere in the U.S., and Europe are also documented. Information collected dates from approximately 11th - 20th century. Among the many families represented are Alverson, Barnhart, Bennet, Bernard, Brodhead, Card, Clarkson, Cortelyou, Crooke, De Graw, Delafield, Dumont, Edwards, Finney, Fitch, Garrett, Griswold, Gorham, Gulick, Hegeman, Howell, Janson, Kilmer, King, McChesney, Minckeler, Misner, Norcross, Oakley, Ostrander, Petty, Raynor, Sicard, Stanton, Staubach-Arnold, Steele, Stimpson, Sturtevant, Taft, Ten Broeck, Throne, Thorpe, Truax, Van Antwerp, Vanderbilt, Vignier, Walton, and Wiggin.

The small amount of records in this collection consist chiefly of letters written to the Society in 1901. Most are addressed to Society's secretary, Hiram Calkins, Jr. or treasurer Henry P. Gibson. Many concern membership in the NYG&B, subscriptions to or purchases of its publications. Some replies from Calkins are also present. There are accounting records and insurance policies, 1900-1901 as well as a postcard to and accounts kept by treasurer George H. Butler, 1884-1886

These were produced between approximately the mid-19th century and the 1970s by various genealogists.

Included are 16th - 20th century correspondence, legal documents, maps, account books, reminiscences, tax lists, pew lists, family Bible records, marriage registers, and some genealogical notes, charts, and clippings. These have been separated from the Genealogical Vertical files due to their age or value. Materials relate primarily to New York State. Of note are a deed, 1596, Bristol, England, for land originally the property of John Carre, deceased, and sold to Robert Redwood by Thomas, John, and Robert Aldnorth, John Bithesey, and John Webb; an account book of Cornelius Clopper, 1743-1771; a tax list, 1783, from Hurley, N.Y.; an assessment roll, 1823, from Jamaica, Queens, N.Y.; a 1790 Federal census of Minisink, N.Y.; an appointment and memorandum book, 1859, of John M. Morell, Hamptonburgh, N.Y. (Morell was a Superintendant of Schools and the book contains lists of schools and teachers); and correspondence of the Caldwell family, 1798-1800, and of the Dean family, ca. 1820-1852. Also included are account books, receipts, wills, deeds, and indentures of the Hasbrouck family of New Paltz, and Kingston, N.Y., ca. 1700-1850.
