Extensive collection of photographs taken by many collectors associated with the department. Photographs illustrate field sites and quarries, specimens, collectors excavating a site, geology of the region, habitat, field parties and their living conditions in the field, and indigenous peoples in the areas in which they collected. Largest series of photographs were taken by Roland T. Bird showing his dinosaur discoveries in the Western United States. Major series of photographs illustrate Barnum Brown's expeditions to the Western United States, Alberta in Canada, Burma, India, Dudley Expedition to Ethiopia, Cuba, Turkey, Greece, New Zealand, and Patagonia, in addition to the American Museum-Sinclair Aerial Survey to search for dinosaurs in the Western United States. Other paleontologists whose expeditions are represented include William D. Matthew, Childs Frick, Henry Fairfield Osborn, George Olsen, Albert Thomson, and Walter Granger. A series of photographs gathered by William D. Matthew consists of portraits of principal collectors of fossil vertebrates. Photographs are identified. Negatives are available for some photographs.

Correspondence written by collectors from the field regarding their finds, principally in the United States but also overseas. Letters frequently describe circumstances of collecting fossils and a description of the fossil, offer specimens for sale, and may be illustrated with photographs. Another series consists of correspondence written between field collectors and Museum personnel, many to Henry Fairfield Osborn. Some letters discuss the Third Asiatic Expedition to Mongolia. Collectors represented include Walter Granger, William D. Matthew, Barnum Brown, Henry Fairfield Osborn, Albert Thomson, J.W. Gidley, Roy Chapman Andrews, Peter C. Title: Third Central Asiatic Expedition administrative records, 1916-1940.

Records encompass correspondence pertaining to Glover M. Allen's publication about the mammals of Mongolia and China. Correspondence of Roy Chapman Andrews with paleontologists and other scientists such as Walter Granger, Henry Fairfield Osborn, Frederick K. Morris, William D. Matthew, and other individuals concerning scientific matters and administration and planning of the expedition. Much correspondence pertains to general operations of the expedition such as applications to become members of the expedition party, first use of cars to explore an unknown country, equipment and supplies, publications, and some financial records. Some letters discuss the negative ramifications on the expedition of China's political turmoil of the mid- to late-1920s. Also, correspondence with Chinese scientists is interspersed throughout the collection, as well as route maps of the expedition.

The Granger-Teilhard de Chardin Collection consists of seventeen letters from Teilhard to Dr. Walter Granger of the American Museum of Natural History, plus one letter to Roy Chapman Andrews, scientist and explorer. The letters contain detailed accounts of Teilhard's paleological findings and scientific research, and his comments on the findings and writings of others in the field. These discussions include a number of allusions to research on Peking Man (Sinanthropos), as well as more detailed mention of Teilhard's work on fauna. There are also a number of references to the Sino-Japanese War and its influence on Teilhard's activities.

Gregory's papers reflect his professional affairs and interest in vertebrate paleontology concerning the evolution of mammals, fish, and primates. He investigated comparative anatomy of the muscles of the vertebrates; evolution of the motor apparatus from fish to man; evolution of the jaws, teeth and skull; comparative anatomy of anthropoid apes and man; evolution of skulls of fishes; and history and relationships of fishes in geologic time. Papers include Gregory's general correspondence with universities, colleges, and scientists about his research topics and publications. Correspondence with museums about purchasing replicas of fossils and with students seeking employment. In addition, his lecture notes prepared for zoology classes emphasizing evolution, 1925-1926 and 1939. Manuscripts and notes for his publications, "Comparative Survey of Evolution From Primeval Life to Man," "On the Evolution and Major Classification of the Civets (Viverridae) and Allied Fossil and Recent Carnivora: A Phylogenetic Study of the Skull and Dentition," and several chapters of procession of the Vertebrates - A Comparative Survey of Evolution from Primeval Life to Man." Also, notes for his paper with Walter Granger, "A Revision of the Titanotheres of Mongolia" and galley proofs for several papers.
