Title: Marie Joe Browne collection, 1868-1999.

The collection contains a diversity of materials which document Browne's personal and professional life. The personal papers include biographical materials consisting of her birth certificate, last will and testament, and medical records as well as letters from artistic friends Jester Hairston (actor), Langston Hughes (poet), James Weldon Johnson (educator and poet) and Lois Mailou Jones (visual artist). Browne's family papers are also contained within her personal papers. These files include correspondence, military records (1916-1940, scattered) and death certificates for her cousin Walter Scott Cowen. The documents making up her professional papers primaraly reflect her artistic career. Files include correspondence, writings which include poems, short stories and plays she performed (many of which were sent to her by the artists, and printed materials consisting of programs and clippings (mainly featuring the Boston Players and Marie Joe Browne's solo performances). There are also awards and certificates that principally document Browne's service to St. Mary's County school system.

The papers of Clarence Cameron White, (1880-1960), renowned violinist, composer and music educator, span the period from 1872 to 1965, and measure nineteen linear feet. The bulk of the papers covers the period from 1930-1960. In 1982 Moorland-Spingarn Research Center acquired the collection from the estate of the late Clarence Cameron and Pura Belpré White (his second wife). White's papers primarily consist of correspondence, writings, programs and photographs documenting his life as a performing artist and composer. The collection also reflects the lives of White's family members, including a noteworthy amount of material related to his second wife Pura Belpré White. (Her primary collection is at The Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College). Information relating to organizations he was directly and indirectly associated with can also be found in the papers, as well as a small collection of recordings of White compositions and works by other African American artists.

Von Tilzer, Harry, 1872-1946. Von Tilzer / Gumm collection, 1878-1959 (bulk 1900-1949).

The collection consists of both personal and professional papers of Harry Von Tilzer and of his brother H. Harold Gumm, and the records of the Harry Von Tilzer Music Publishing Co. (HVTMPC). The records of the HVTMPC are inextricably combined not only with Harry Von Tilzer's papers but also with Gumm's papers and those of his firm Goldie & Gumm. Von Tilzer's personal papers include correspondence, including letters to and from one of his primary collaborators, Andrew B. Sterling; writings; legal and financial documents; and drafts of his autobiography. The HVTMPC materials primarily consist of music (manuscript and printed); lyrics (manuscript and typewritten); scripts by such authors as Dolph Singer, Frances Nordstrom, and Junie McCree; legal and financial records; and a catalog of works published by HVTMPC. There is a large collection of songs, ranging from lead sheets without words to complete piano-vocal scores. Most of Gumm's subject files relate to his activities as an agent for many prominent black performers of the 1930s and 1940s, including Georgette Harvey, Jester Hairston, Rex Ingram, and Teddy Hale. In addition, there are papers relating to a touring production of Cabin in the sky. Materials relating to their brothers (music publisher Will Von Tilzer; songwriter Albert Von Tilzer; and Jules and Jack Von Tilzer, who both worked in the family business) also appear in the collection. The collection also contains an assortment of programs from music halls and vaudeville houses; photographs of the Von Tilzer brothers and early vaudeville performers; and clippings.

The Von Tilzer / Gumm Collection consists of both personal and professional papers of composer and music publisher Harry Von Tilzer (1872-1946) and his brother, H. Harold Gumm (1881 or 82-1973), who was a lawyer, agent, and producer in the entertainment business. After having served as attorney for the Harry Von Tilzer Music Publishing Co. (HVTMPC) for several decades, Harold Gumm served as executor of Harry Von Tilzer's estate and took over the company when Von Tilzer died in 1946. This collection contains the records of the HVTMPC which are inextricably combined not only with Harry Von Tilzer's papers but also with Gumm's papers and those of his firm Goldie & Gumm. Series III, Topical Folders (1935-2001), contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, interviews, articles from the internet, business cards, and programs.

The Robert B. Walls Collection consists of sound recordings of Oregon State choral performances made and assembled by Walls. The recordings include 64 reel-to-reel audiotapes; 47 phonograph records; and 4 compact discs. The bulk of the recordings are of performances by the Choralaires; however, other Oregon State choral groups such as the A Cappella Choir, Glee Club, and Madigrals are included. The performances include Christmas concerts, tributes to the state of Oregon, classical and sacred works, KOAC radio broadcasts, songs about Oregon State, and selections from the Choralaires' European tours in 1971 and 1973. The audiotapes include recordings of choir performances in Baker (1956) and Beaverton (1968), Oregon. The phonograph records include presto discs as well as mass-produced phonograph records (with jackets for some items). They include recordings from workshops on spirituals and gospel music led by Jester Hairston in 1961 and 1963. Recordings of Oregon State songs, Songs of Oregon State College and Within a Vale of Western Mountains, are included as well as the Face of Oregon, a 1959 concert commemorating the Oregon centennial. Recordings of performances by Nancy Allworth, Jerry Christopherson, and Byron Walls are included in the collection. The compact discs are reproductions of several recordings within the collection, including highlights of the 1971 and 1973 European tours; The Robert B. Walls Years: 1947-1974; and Within a Vale of Western Mountains, which is also available online in the Best of the Archives. Songs of Oregon State College and Face of Oregon are also available online. The collection also includes three handbooks on music conducting, notation, and harmony that were owned by Walls.
