Coffin; and the original manuscript of Winds of the Northern Hemisphere. Additional correspondence of James Henry Coffin exists elsewhere in the Smithsonian Institution Archives, especially in the Joseph Henry Collection, Record Unit 7001, and Meteorological Project Records, Record Unit 60.

The collection consists of correspondence, diaries, journals, a handwritten copy of Pugh's family line, articles written by Evan Pugh for newspapers, and notebooks relating to his youth, scholarly research on nitrogen and fertilizers, and travels in Europe. There is a handwritten copy of his doctoral dissertation from Georgia Augusta University in Gottingen, Germany. Also, includes lecture notes, addresses, student exams and papers, and a great deal of correspondence relating to his tenure as first president of the Farmers' High School, 1860-1864. The bulk of the correspondence deals with the day-to-day business of the school's operations. Significant correspondents include Samuel Johnson, George C. Caldwell, Hugh N. McAllister, Isaac Newton, A.O. Hiester, and William G. Waring. Also, includes papers representing his membership in the American Philosophical Society, London Chemical Society, and Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture. In addition, several correspondents discuss the Civil War.

Of special and specific interest are Brewer's letters to members of his family which chronicle his many trips and scientific expeditions, his correspondence with his colleagues, and the methodical and voluminous notes and diaries he kept on virtually everything he did or encountered.
