Title: Jesse Simons Papers 1945-2000

Jesse Simons (1917-2006) was a distinguished labor arbitrator, and served as Director of the American Artbitration Association’s Labor Management Institute. A veteran of the U.S. Trotskyist movement of the 1930s and 40s, he held a variety of blue-collar jobs, served in World War II, and became a union official and organizer. As an arbitrator he was called upon to rule on cases involving many important sectors of New York City labor, and served on the Personnel Review Board of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and as an arbitrator for the National Mediation Board. The collection contains personal, political and professional correspondence, writings and presentations, arbitration and other decisions, reports and background files. NOTE: This collection is housed offsite and advance notice is required for use.

The papers consist of extensive client project files and documentation (sketches, mechanicals, models, printed samples, package designs, photographs, and posters), business and professional correspondence, financial records, publications, and personal papers. Among Beall's specialties were corporate identity campaigns and style manuals, and he created logos and trademarks for prominent American companies including Caterpillar Tractor, International Paper, Martin Marietta, Merrill Lynch, and Rohm and Haas, as well as pharmaceutical advertising and periodicals for the Upjohn Company. Some of his most notable designs were a series of posters designed in the 1930s for the United States government's Rural Electrification Administration. A long-time member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Art Directors Club of New York, and the Society of Typographic Arts, Beall compiled scrapbooks and portfolios of his work and the publicity it garnered; his designs and projects were exhibited to acclaim throughout his career, and his homes and studios in New York and Connecticut were photographed by Philippe Halsman, André Kertész, and Arnold Newman, among others.

Collection includes two volumes; one with title of "Log of My Trip to Europe on the S. S. Leviathan" and the second with the title of "Log of My Return Trip from Europe on the S. S. Leviathan." These trips were designed for college students; a list of participants is included in each volume. Both volumes have the initials "E.M." written in them; according to the list of participants these logs may have belonged to Ella Mason from the Portia School of Law. Volumes include the name of the commander of the steamship along with names of the executive staff; a listing of common nautical terms; information about the "Greatest Ship in the World;" and a review of the tour, found in Volume 2. The journey was round trip from New York to Southampton via Cherbourg.

Series I: Subject Files, 1945-2000, contains personal correspondence and biographical materials reflecting the wide range of Jesse Simons cultural and intellectual interests. Professional correspondence found in this series relates to the major arenas of his activity as an arbitrator. Also included are articles and speeches by Simons and others; material documenting his work with the United States Lines, and industry reports and other background material related to his work. Of special interest is a file of political correspondence, 1945-1948. Written by Simons and signed Buddy, these letters reflect his views and activities and as a member of the Workers Party, a Trotskyist group. Series II: Arbitration Decisions, 1970s-1990s, is a selection of case files representing the full subject range and geographical spread of Simons work as an arbitrator. The bulk of the decisions date from the 1980s.

John Borland Thayer, Jr. was a vice-president of the Pennsylvania Railroad when he died in the sinking of on April 15, 1912.
