The collection contains eight letters of John F. Moore, Baltimore, to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.M. Moore, Aberdeen, Ohio, re: a trip to Washington where he visited the Capitol and met Congressmen Wadsworth, Mallory and Cox, describing a disagreement between the former two and Congressman Green Smith. Other letters discuss his work in the commission firm of Mitchell Oliver and Company. He also mentions speculating in gold futures. The collection also contains a clothing allowance book, 1861-1863, for Company K., 46th Pennsylvania Infantry.

Smith's papers consist of a scrapbook and two miscellaneous items. Smith's scrapbook contains a variety of newspaper clippings and published speeches related to the Civil War, Kentucky politics during that era, and Smith's post-war activity as a prohibitionist and Union veteran. Most of the clippings are either speeches given by Smith, letters written by Smith, or articles that reference Smith. Many of the articles concern Smith's 1863 campaign for representative from Kentucky's Sixth Congressional District and political issues Smith faced in Congress. Post-war material documents Smith's campaign as the presidential candidate of the National Prohibition Party and his work with the Union Veterans' Union.

Collection primarily consisting of letters from Martha Adams to a cousin in Tennessee in the 1850's. Letters focus on Kentucky, specifically Clark County. They discuss religion, politics, general health, farming, raising livestock, politics, slavery, and social life, particularly marriages, deaths, births, and parties. Religion is the most prominent topic in the letters, discussing preachers and preaching, revivals, meetings, and religious beliefs. Overall, the letters detail daily life in rural, antebellum Kentucky.

Title: Reminiscence, 189-

Reminiscence written per request of a Civil War incident in which the sister of a friend who was serving in the Confederate army came to him for help. His friend, Clay Lindsey had been wounded in the arch and needed a special boot. Lindsey's sister, Mrs. Hamilton, ask Smith to help her make sure the boot reached her brother in Richmond. After being turned down by Secretary of War Stanton, they approached the President, who gave her a signed note to get the boots to her brother.

James E. Callaway was the Montana Territorial Secretary (1871-1877); legislator; and U.S. District Attorney. This collection consists of a volume (1853-1868) containing commentary by Callaway on a wide variety of political issues and the Republican Party prior to the Civil War; a handwritten article (1904) on the administration of Governor Green Clay Smith; and photocopies of various items documenting Callaway's military service. A subgroup for Llewellyn L. Callaway includes a speech on the vigilante movement; and miscellaneous correspondence; and several reminiscent writings. (SC 1215) Collection consists of two subgroups: papers of James E. Callaway and papers of his son Llewellyn L. Callaway. James E. Callaway's papers contain scattered items documenting different aspects of his life. There is a volume (1853-1868) containing commentary on a wide variety of political issues and the Republican Party prior to the Civil War. In addition there is a handwritten article (1904) on the administration of Governor Green Clay Smith [published in Contributions to the Historical Society of Montana, Vol. 5]. There is an incoming letter (1887) from Henry Elling telling of the death of Captain James Williams and a letter (1877) from O.O. Howard concerning the location of Chief Joseph's forces. There is also a list (1877) of horses lost by the Virginia City Volunteers at Camp Callaway. Military records of Callaway include a listing of losses suffered by the 21st Illinois Infantry, a clipping (1864) describing a sword presentation to Callaway from the non-commissioned officers and privates of the 81st Indiana Volunteers, and Callaway's appointment (1865) as a lieutenant colonel of the 21st Illinois Volunteers. The Llewellyn L. Callaway subgroup includes a speech (1938) before a Masonic meeting in Dillon; a 95-page typescript reminiscence by Callaway (undated) describing his family's history, his early childhood, education, and experiences at White Sulphur Springs and Virginia City; a 5-page typescript reminiscence (photocopy) of a trip Callaway made from White Sulphur Springs to Helena by stage in 1892; and four letters (1932-1950) written by Callaway. [Photos, a postcard, and a stereo slide were transferred from this collection to the Photo Archives.]
