American reformer and linguist.
Elihu Burritt (1810-1879), famous as "the Learned Blacksmith," was born in New Britain, Conn. During his youth he apprenticed himself to a blacksmith. After working at various jobs, he became interested in improving his education and moved to Worcester, intending to use the library of the American Antiquarian Society to study foreign languages. In Worcester, he worked as a blacksmith and taught himself to read some thirty languages. Burritt decided he wanted a literary career and in 1839 he began to publish Literary Geminae, a magazine in English and French. The magazine failed the following year. He began lecturing at lyceums, and was involved in evangelical, temperance, and antislavery activities. In 1844 Burritt started a weekly newspaper in Worcester called The Christian Citizen. He became increasingly interested in pacifism and associated himself with peace organizations. In 1846 he went to England and founded the League of Universal Brotherhood. During most of the remainder of his life he wrote numerous books and traveled extensively in Europe and America lecturing and working for world peace.
Born and died in New Britain, Conn. Founded League of Universal Brotherhood to further the course of world peace; organized Brussels Peace Congress of 1848; served as U.S. consul at Birmingham, Eng., 1863-1870.
Reformer, publisher, and author.
Linguist, reformer; formed League of Universal Brotherhood, 1846; U.S. consulate, Birmingham, England, 1863-1870.
Buritt was an American reformer.
Burritt, a linguist, reformer and peace activist also organized peace conferences.
Elihu Burritt was born in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1810. Known as the "Learned Blacksmith" because he was primarily self-taught, he was a social reformer, abolitionist, absolute pacifist, linguist, and internationalist. He advocated programs of international cooperation and inexpensive international postage rates (which he called "ocean penny postage"), and promoted his plans by means of "Olive Leaves" (brief statements written by peace reformers) and "Friendly Addresses" between paired cities in the United States and England. Burritt was active in the American Peace Society, and was a founder of the League of Universal Brotherhood. He was involved with several international peace conferences in Europe, notably the first Peace Congress held in Brussels in 1848. Although a staunch abolitionist and a believer in complete equality among the races, Burritt opposed the American Civil War on absolute pacifist principles. He proposed a system of "compensated emancipation", to pay Southern slave owners to free their slaves. Burritt died in New Britain, Connecticut in 1879.
Elihu Burritt was an American reformer and peace advocate. Apprenticed as a blacksmith, he sought opportunities for learning, and taught himself Latin, Greek, mathematics, and other subjects while working as a smith. He began publishing, and lecturing, and acquired the nickname of The learned blacksmith. He continued to work for peace and the abolition of slavery, founding periodicals and writing tracts.

Title:
Woolsey family papers, 1750-1976 (inclusive), 1811-1921 (bulk).
The papers document three generations of the Woolsey family. The most prominent figures in the collection are William Walton Woolsey (1766-1839), land owner and merchant in New York City; his son, Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889), Greek scholar, political theorist and president of Yale College; and Theodore Salisbury Woolsey (1852-1929), professor of international law at Yale Law School, son of Theodore Dwight Woolsey. The papers of William Walton Woolsey contain extensive business correspondence, ledgers, legal papers, documents relating to land sales in New York and Ohio, as well as family and personal letters. Since he was engaged in the importation of sugar, cotton and hardware, some of his business correspondence is political with discussions of the Jay Treaty of 1794, the problems of piracy, American neutrality in the 1790s and the general politics of the period. Important correspondents are Chauncey Goodrich, Archibald Gracie, Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, Elihu and Nathaniel Chauncey, Oliver Wolcott, Benjamin Tallmadge, Jedidiah Morse, James Roosevelt, John A. Schuyler, Comfort Sands, John Broome, and Nicholas Bayard. The papers of Theodore Dwight Woolsey contain his writings on Greek language and literature, the Bible, international law and the texts of his sermons.

Title:
Papers, 1791-1910.
Contains a variety of documents, though mostly letters and poems. The collection gives insights into personal and family matters, shows relationships between the McNary family and the Butler family, and reveals facets of American political and educational life during the 1800s. Most of the letters contain greetings to and updates regarding distant family members. Samuel McNary's 1853 appointment to the Springfield, MA school committee is included; as is an invitation to an inaugural ball for William Henry Harrison in 1841; also, a form letter reply from New York Governor Theodore Roosevelt. Legal papers include a quitclaim deed, probate papers, and letters of appointment. A letter (undelivered?) and poem "To Charles Dickens" is also included. The collection also includes two copies of "The Springfield Musket" from December 1864, apparently an ephemeral newspaper printed for distribution at a fair in that city. The collection includes an account book kept by an unknown milliner in 1850. Blank pages in the volume were used by M. McNary Spencer for writing poems. The milliner sold bonnets, hats, ribbons, buttons, and lace. Among the school-related items are an invitation to the Springfield High School alumni meeting of 1855 and a pale turquoise ribbon stamped with a picture of the school, the dates 1848-1855, and the word Alumna. Printed eulogies to the memory of Elihu Burritt (died 1879) and James C. Butler (killed in battle in 1821) are found. In addition to her poems, there are a number of compositions written by Martha A. McNary, including tributes to her pets. An undated (but probably late 19th century) inventory of the estate of Sarah A. McNary of Hartford, Connecticut, is a room-by-room listing of furniture, carpets, tablewares, and other household goods.

Title:
Daguerreotype collection 1839-1900.
The American Antiquarian Society's photograph collection includes nearly 230 daguerreotypes. Daguerreotypes, the first commercial form of photography, appeared in America around the year 1839. These were produced by first sensitizing a polished silvered copper plate with iodine vapor, and then exposing the plate to light. The image was developed over hot mercury, fixed, and rinsed. This was a direct positive process, meaning that no negatives were produced, and so each daguerreotype is unique. Daguerreotypes can be easily distinguished from other early photographs by their reflective, mirror-like surface. They were generally produced in the following sizes, which are noted in the inventory: Imperial or Mammoth Plate - Larger than 6 1/2" x 8 1/2"; Whole Plate - 6 1/2" x 8 1/2"; Half Plate - 4 1/2" x 5 1/2"; Quarter Plate - 3 1/4" x 4 1/4"; Sixth Plate - 2 3/4" x 3 1/4"; Ninth Plate - 2"x 2 1/2"; Sixteenth Plate - 1 1/2" x 1 3/4" The collection includes daguerreotypes, some in cases, made mainly in the United States, with portraits of men, women and children. Notable subjects include Edgar Allan Poe, Clara Barton, Abby Kelly Foster Daniel Webster, with multiple portraits of Caroline Moore, Ida Adelia Barton, Elihu Burritt, Caroline Moore, Luther Holman Hale, Mary Louise May Pearson, and Dr. Samuel B. Woodward. There are a number of unidentified portraits in the collection. Rare views of San Francisco and Worcester are also included. Photographers represented in this collection include Luther Holman Hale, John Denison Baldwin, B.D. Maxham, Dr. Van Alstin, Moses Sanford Chapin, J.D. Wells, S. Peck & Co., Williamson Bros., George Adams, George Clark Jr., Samuel Root, Alfred P. Critchlow, and Meade & Bro.

All but one of his 1855 letters were addressed to Emma, a friend he met in England, and were posted from London and later New Britain. An 1871 letter to the New York Independent asked where the article was that he had written about an International Exchange of Pulpits. The other letters concern additional lectures in various locations. The two lectures were about peace, international cooperation, and the horrors of war. One is entitled "The Constitutional Unity of Christian and the Natural Bonds of Brotherhood" which was written about 1847.
