The collection of the Edward J. Stemmler papers has been organized into the following series: Appointment book, 1975-1993; Certificate, awards, etc., 1942-1994; Correspondence, 1972-1993 December; General files, 1959-1999; Papers and reprints, 1965-1994; Personal files, 1950-1995; Photographs, 1975-1994; Speeches and lectures, 1973-1998; Telephone message form, 1990 July-1992 August. Correspondence and General files are the two major series. The Correspondence series documents Stemmler's academic and administrative work at Penn medical school and Penn Medical Center from 1972 to June 1990. His correspondence as AAMC Executive Vice President runs from mid 1990 to the end of 1993. The General files series documents Stemmler's work with all medical and professional institutions, among them the Penn School of Medicine, Penn Medical Center, the Clinical Practices at the University of Pennsylvania, the AAMC, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American College of Physicians, Philadelphia General Hospital, etc. It also includes subjects that had significant influence on his career, such as the termination of his service as Executive Vice President of the Penn Medical Center in 1989 and his relationship with his mentor Dr. Francis C. Wood. The Personal files series includes a bulky folder of material related to Stemmler's military service from 1951 to 1953.

Gaylord P. Harnwell Papers

Title: Gaylord P. Harnwell Papers

The first series consists of biographical material of Harnwell as represented in two bio files, a file of early job offers to him, a file of family tree, an interview about his life and career, and files of obituary material and memorial articles. Also included in this series is his thesis on physics completed when he graduated from Haverford College in 1924. The second series of personal correspondence, spanning from 1953 to 1981, concerns matters of personal or family interest. The third series contains all business correspondence, administrative or professional. This series has been arranged alphabetically by subject. Major entries of this series include files of an Asian trip in 1956, a cyclotron project for the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in the year of 1940-1941, a file of Foreign Policy Research Institute of the University related to a conference on transatlantic technological collaboration in 1967, files concerning the Graduate School of Education in the period of 1961-1964, files of Iran and Pahlavi University dating from 1960 to 1980, files of the Department of Physics of the University from 1939 to 1973, a file of the Philadelphia Award he received in 1965, and files of his work with the United States military services from 1944 to 1981. The series of Administrative files include a chronologically-arranged file of administrative correspondence from 1953 to 1967, a sub-series of Desk Calendar from 1960 to 1980, a General File arranged by the initials of correspondents running from 1960 to 1981, and miscellaneous files related to the history and administration of the University or other outside organizations Harnwell was associated with. Also included in this series is a file of loyalty investigation conducted in the year of 1952-1953 concerning a Penn faculty. The series of Addresses and Lectures has been arranged chronologically, running from 1955 to 1977. Also included in this series is a taped farewell speech Harnwell made to the University Senate in 1970. The sixth series is all of teaching and research files consisting of teaching notes or reference material related to various topics in physics. The files date from 1920s to 1950s. The seventh series consists of manuscripts and notes made by Harnwell including those that were later published in book forms--Atomic Physics, Introduction to Physical Science, and Principles of Electricity and Electromagnetism. Published articles and books are to be found in the eighth series, which includes, occasionally, correspondence related to specific publishing matters. Reference reprints in the ninth series comprise basically published articles of others that Harnwell collected for his reference. The tenth series is for records of civic or governmental organizations outside the University of Pennsylvania where Harnwell served at different times. Major organizations represented in this series include the Congress of World Unity, 1973-1975; Governor's Committee on Tax Administration, 1959-1967; Governor's Council of Science and Technology, 1962-1964; Governor's Priorities Commission, 1968-1970; Governor's Tax Study and Revision Commission, 1967-1969; Greater Philadelphia Movement, 1960-1975; Greater Philadelphia Partnership, 1975-1980; Committee on Undersea Warfare of the National Academy of Sciences, 1950-1979; New York Stock Exchange, 1965-1968; Penn Central Company, 1958-1974; and the University City Science Center, 1970-1981. Series XI collects awards, diploma and certificates Harnwell received. Series XII includes portraits of Harnwell and others as well as group photographs taken on various occasions. Series XIII is of memorabilia items including a plaque of award for the support of the study of Baltic Language and Culture, Harnwell's name plate used in the New York Stock Exchange, a metal plate of appreciation from Penn students, and two academic hoods he used for graduation ceremonies at Princeton University. The fourteenth series holds all clippings, mostly from newspapers, that were originally collected by Mrs. Harnwell and pasted in bound scrapbooks. The clippings, running from 1938 all the way to 1971, record Harnwell's life and work with Penn as well as the development of the University in multifarious aspects during the period.

The Helen O. Dickens Papers document the latter half of Dickens' career in the field of medicine, medical education and public health. The collection contains correspondence, articles, reprints, grant proposals and some notes regarding Dickens' work in teenage pregnancy during the 1960s and 1970s which can be found in the Medical and Correspondence series. It is Dickens' administrative work and participation in professional organizations which figures most prominently in the collection. Her important role to enhance the participation of minorities in medical education, particularly the University of Pennsylvania, is well represented in the form of correspondence, minutes, and reports in the Minority Affairs subseries of the University of Pennsylvania series and National Association of Medical Minority Education subseries of the Organizations series. In addition to her advocacy work for minorities, Dickens' papers contain material which highlights her work with women's groups such as the Pan American Medical Women's Alliance and the American Medical Women's Association. There is also correspondence, minutes, reports, and newsletters of a number of professional organizations in which Dickens was an active member, such as the Marriage Council of Philadelphia, the Devereux Foundation, and the Association of American Medical Colleges.

This massive collection documents the life and work of Jonathan Evans Rhoads in multiple dimensions and through all major periods of his 94 long years of career. The first series represents his personal and family experiences. It consists of five sub-series including his personal and biographical material; correspondence and other records related to his family members; files of his social interest and participation in activities not directly related to his professional interest; traveling material; as well as his financial records. This sub-series also includes a group of 39 audio cassettes of interviews done in the preparation of a biography of Rhoads that continued from 1992 to 1996. The second series documents all aspects of Rhoads' professional activities as a surgeon, medical faculty and a senior university administrator. The bulk of the correspondence sub-series reflects his communication with hundreds of individuals or institutions on all kinds of subjects of mutual professional interests. Among his correspondents are Clyde Barker, Baruch Blumberg, Britton Chance, David Y. Cooper, Stanley J. Dudrick, Loren C. Eiseley, Claire Fagin, William T. Fitts, Jr., Gaylord P. Harnwell, C. Everett Koop, Leonard D. Miller, Francis D. Moore, I.S. Ravdin, Louis Silverstein, and the United States House of Representatives and Senate. Included in this sub-series is also a litigation file related to a case between a chordoma patient and physicians of the surgical department of the University Hospital. The Robert Wilson Dean's Records, 1899-1938, consists of records of Dr. Wilson during his career at the Medical College of South Carolina from 1908-1943. The collection is arranged in five series: administrative, building and development, faculty, reorganization and student relations. The Administration Series consists of letters, documents, and reports regarding various administrative matters at the Medical College between 1909 and 1938, including standards for aptitude tests, Board of Trustees matters and correspondence, educational, departmental, and budget matters, including inventory reports, audit investigations regarding the G.H. Walker budgetary matter between 1932 and 1936, and annual reports from various departments. This series is arranged alphabetically. The Building and Development Series consists of information pertaining to the sale and procurement of buildings and property at the Medical College. Information consists of documents regarding the sale of Roper Hospital in 1910, the sale and transfer of property on Queen and Franklin streets in 1913, and a scrapbook belonging to Robert Wilson that documents the progress of the Medical College building campaign between 1913 and 1914. Materials include letters, legal documents, and a scrapbook consisting of newspaper clippings, editorials, and bulletins tracking the campaign to raise funds for a new building at the Medical College and announcing the donation of Lucas Park for a building site, the completion of the new building and its formal transfer to the state in 1914, and the placement of the Medical College as a class A institution in 1916. Also contains a photocopy of the scrapbook. This series is arranged chronologically. The Faculty Series consists of correspondence to Robert Wilson concerning faculty-related matters including applications and resignations of faculty and staff, minutes from faculty meetings, and the Dr. W.G. Phillips personnel matter. Materials include correspondence between Robert Wilson and various members of faculty, Board of Trustees, and other institutions, hand-written notes of faculty committee meetings, and various correspondences regarding W.G. Phillips' resignation from the Medical College. This series is arranged alphabetically. The Reorganization Series consists of reports and correspondence related to the reorganization of the Medical College between 1904-1937. Includes background information in the form of correspondence from Francis L. Parker regarding his attempts to register the college with the Association of American Medical Colleges, and Robert Wilson's subsequent work in procuring the necessary financial and educational resources to meet the AAMC requirements. Materials include letters between Dr. Wilson and various faculty, Board of Trustees members, and state officials, inspection reports of the AMA and the AAMC, correspondence relating to Dr. Wilson's campaign for state approbations between 1930 and 1937, and answers to questionnaires regarding medical education from various other institutions. This series is arranged chronologically. The Student Relations Series consists of letters, reports, and booklets ranging from 1904 to 1937 pertaining to student relations. Includes correspondence regarding student-related matters such as the Alpha Omega Alpha fraternity, applicants, requests for facility improvements from interns and residents, recommendations and applications for student scholarships, student body and honor committee meetings, and individual student petitions. Letters and documents regarding administrative matters such as student tuition and aid programs, registration, and distribution are also included. This series is arranged alphabetically.
