This collection contains two promissory notes to hire slaves, one from Edward Martin to Mrs. Mary K. Hopkins and the other from B.E. Meade to Dr. A. Hopkins. Two letters, written during the Civil War, from George Hopkins to Joe Hopkins and from Erasmus Hopkins to Joe Hopkins, contain news of a march to and from Fredericksburg on little food, Erasmus' detailing as assistant superintendent to build a dam, and inquiries into conditions at home. A third letter from Major N.R. Fitzhugh to Capt. George Hopkins encloses a receipt and a form to be filled in [not included] to pay for beef.

Papers, 1835-1917 and undated. About half of the collection consists of correspondence to and from Parker and friends during the Civil War. Most of these men were enlisted in Michigan infantry units. The rest of the collection includes post-war business correspondence, 1866-1917; Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) correspondence, 1888-1896; state laws concerning disabled veterans, 1883-1887; and the papers and a photograph of Flemon Drake, M.D., 1835-1860, Parker's father-in-law. The oversized folder includes a list of the Michigan Boys in Blue (Co. C, 1st Regiment, 5th District), 1866, a veterans group that was a predecessor of the G.A.R.
