Includes poems by Donne, Raleigh, Corbet, Strode, St. Clive, Henry Wotton, an epitaph on Shakespeare by Basse (leaf 3v) and Shakespeare's epitaphs on Sir Thomas and Sir Edward Standly (leaf 8). (In same had as copy in Portland MS see William Shakespeare A textual companion, 457.) Part II: Exercise book of declamations, epistles and verse in English and Latin, many by Thomas Smith and a few by John Smith, ca. 1659-1661.

Title: [Play concerning the English civil war], [ca. 1650].

Manuscript on paper, in single hand, of a fragment of a play, with comic and satirical elements, about the English civil war and the Battle of Edgehill. The play is divided into at least four acts (leaves are missing at the end) and balances two plots; one concerns the tailor Littlewit who joins the Parliamentary army and his shrewish wife, and the other follows the military and political maneuverings of the upper class. Historical characters include John Pym, Denzil Holles, Sir William Strode, Arthur Heselrige, and John Hampden of the House of Commons, Prince Rupert, Lord George Digby, Robert Bertie Earl of Lindsey, Robert Devereux Earl of Essex, Lord Philip Wharton, Hugh Peters ("from New England"), Isaac Penington Lord Mayor of London, and King Charles I.

Poems by late 16th- and early 17th-century authors, ranging from love lyrics to commentary on current events. Contains four poems known to be by Robert Herrick and 18 more attributed to him; also poems by Thomas Carew (47), William Strode (25), Bishop Richard Corbet (11), Thomas Randolph (8), Bishop Henry King (7), Sir John Harington (6), Ben Jonson (5), John Donne, (4), Sir Walter Raleigh (3), Gervase Warmestry (3), Sir John Davies (2), William Browne (2), and one each of Henry Rainoldes, Samuel Rowlands, Sir Henry Wotton, William Drummond, Robert Browne, Thomas Bateson, Sir Thomas Jay, John Gill, James I, John Fletcher, John Taylor, Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Edward Dyer, Sir Robert Ayton, Samuel Daniel, Francis Beaumont, and Brian Duppa; and Shakespeare's sone "Take O take those lips away." On six pages at the end and on the inside of the front cover is an index. The compilation was made in a single hand, and not completed before 1633, since the latest datable text is an elegy to Gusavus Adolphus, whodied in that year.

The bulk of the correspondence consists of incoming letters to Bowyer from the scholars Edward Clarke, William Clarke, and Jeremiah Markland, concerning printing, scholarly subjects, languanges including Greek and Hebrew, and family matters. Other correspondents include James Stanier Clarke, Catherine Markland, William Strode, Moses Williams, and William Wotten. Also includes two items written by Bowyer and a few letters addressed to Bowyer's apprentice and partner John Nichols. Letters prior to 1737 may have been addressed to the elder William Bowyer. Two letters in latin, signed "Ambrosius Bonvicus," were probably written by Ambrose Bonwicke as a student at St. John's College, Oxford. Other Papers include a manuscript address for a Mr. Stawell to give to the Duchess of York, an engraving of William Bowyer, an 1874 collection inventory by James Crossley, and proof sheets of an unidentified history of Bowyer's printing business.

Several different hands. One, p. 92-209, very similar to hand in V.a.96, leaves 1-84. Authors include Donne, Ben Jonson, Strode, and Thomas Randolph. Poems include Basse's epitaph on Shakespeare (p. 189); Herrick's King Oberon his cloathing, (p. 184); and Cowley's prologue and epilogue to The guardian acted before Prince Charles at Cambridge, 1641, (Wing C6673), (p. 212). On p. 216 is Mr. Denham's "Cooper's Hill", edited by B.O. Hehir in Expans'd hieroglyphicks.

Poems on a number of subjects, entered in several hands. The heavily-represented poets are William Strode (23 pieces), Richard Corbet (7), and John Donne (6). Also present is a version of William Basse's "Epitaph on Shakespeare." Most of the later poems are written by Royalists attacking the Parliamentary party. The volume consists of 70 leaves, one leaf between 35 and 36 lacking; the first part from the beginning to leaf 59 with the exception of two poems is in one hand and was written about 1638; the second is in a later hand, about 1645, with one poem at the end added by a third person.

Manuscript commonplace book formerly owned by members of the Wyrley family. Though the ownership inscription in the front of the volume bears the name of Michael Keepis, it seems probable that the volume had its origins with Francis Wyrley, whose unpublished poems appear in large number throughout the text. Other poets represented include Henry Blount, Thomas Carew, John Donne, John Ford, and William Strode. In the latter half of the volume are manuscript inventories of belongings of the Wyrley family, dated 1675-1677.
