Negative of George Howard, Jr., on September 30, 1980. Judge Howard grew up in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas in the 1930's. In 1941, he joined the U.S. Navy serving as a Seabee during World War II. He was the first African American to serve on the State Claims Commission, the State Supreme Court, and the State Appeal Court. In 1957, he was an attorney for the NAACP. He married Vivian Smith of Pine Bluff.

"Les" Hollingsworth respond to allegations of gross mismanagement of the organization. Albert Porter was Civil Right leader and was the faculty adviser to the Lane College student NAACP chapter that organized protests in downtown Jackson, Tennessee in 1960. Porter has been the member of many Arkansas state committees, most recently the Governor's Advisory Council on Aging (GACA). Porter was also the Chairman of the Board of the Little Rock Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), a state agency that administered federal job Training funds. In addition to his political activities, Porter is a leader at the Bahia Center. As of 2001, Porter was living in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas and an active civic leader. Born in Little Rock on April 12, 1936, "Les" (Perlesta Arthur) Hollingsworth was a prominent chemist, lawyer and judge. He received degrees from Dunbar High School in 1954, Talladega Alabama College majoring in chemistry and a degree in Law from University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1969. He married Ada Shine. Hollingsworth became a partner in the first integrated law firm in Little Rock, Walker, Rotenbery, Kaplan, Lavey and Hollingsworth. In addition to working as a lawyer, Hollingsworth served on the Little Rock city council, as a deputy prosecutor for the state's sixth judicial district, an advisor to the late-Arkansas Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller, a justice on the Arkansas Supreme Court in the mid-1980s and an administrative aide on prison affairs to Governor Winthrop Rockefeller.

The photograph shows three businesses located in the Gem Building included the Jones Brothers Distributing Company [billiards supplies] at 115 West 3rd Street operated by Calvin P. Jones; the Club Cafe run by Oscar C. Croom, Jr. at 113 West 3rd; and the Headliner Club, Inc. at 117 1/2 West 3rd at which Mrs. Jean Hidlebaugh was President.

Bates of Little Rock, Arkansas, at the National Black Convention on March 16, 1974. Daisy Lee Gatson Bates was born to Hezekiah "Babe" Gatson and Millie Riley on November 11, 1914 in Huttig, Union County, Arkansas. Daisy Bates died on November 4, 1999 in Little Rock. Daisy married at age 15 to Lucius Christopher Bates, who was born on April 27, 1901, in Mississippi and died August 1980 in Little Rock. Daisy Bates graduated from high school after their marriage. The Bates moved to Little Rock in 1941 where they edited and published one of the first weekly African American newspaper in Arkansas, the Arkansas State Press. She was a civil rights leader who came into the national spotlight in 1957 during the desegregation crisis at Central High School in Little Rock. The Bates were active in the Arkansas Conference of the NAACP movement, which she served for a time as president. For her contributions to the civil rights movement, Mrs. Bates received a commendation from the Arkansas General Assembly, the Diamond Cross of Malta from the Philadelphia Cotillion Society and was named an honorary citizen of Philadelphia. She also received an honorary degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. In 1962, Mrs. Bates published her memoir, The Long Shadow of Little Rock, which was reprinted in 1988 and received the American Book Award. Mr. Bates was the field representative in Arkansas for the NAACP from 1960 to 1971.
