The collection is the administrative, political, and personal papers of LA County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn. It includes papers from his term on the LA City Council and his various campaigns for office covering the period of about 1945 to 1993, with major emphasis on his tenure as Supervisor, from 1953 to 1993. It contains correspondence, reports, drafts of legislation, internal memoranda, photographs, audiotapes, maps, motion pictures, videotape and campaign ephemera. Kennedy's assassination and the case against Sirhan Sirhan, LA County Chief Medical Examiner-Coroner, the investigation into Marilyn Monroe's death, California law and legislation, courts, crime, city planning, health services and mental health, the Human Relations Commission, race relations, social services, military and veterans affairs, museums, public works, the Sheriff's Department, education, schools and universities, earthquake issues, parks, urban affairs, the Los Angeles International Airport, professional sports in LA (including the Dodgers baseball team, their move to LA and the construction of their stadium), the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the LA Memorial Sports Arena, drugs and narcotics, freeways, California government, United States government, water supply, air pollution, public transportation and the County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Watts riots, the riots in 1992 after the Rodney King decision, labor issues, the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Hospital, as well as Culver City, Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lynwood, and Torrance, California. Title: Metropolitan Coach Lines records 1953-1958

The records of Metropolitan Coach Lines document a pivotal moment in Los Angeles history, the mid to late 1950's. The contracts, correspondence, publications, photos and other material contained in this collection directly reflect post-war Los Angeles' move away from a city and suburbs connected through rail lines, to a metropolis dominated by motor vehicles. The activity recorded in this collection thus significantly shaped the peculiar character of contemporary Los Angeles.The collection contains many items of particular interest and value. Series #3, , includes the sales agreements between Pacific Electric, Western Transit, and Metropolitan Coach Lines (MCL) that transferred the passenger rail right of ways, facilities, and properties to MCL and contractually committed MCL to phasing out rail lines. Series #6, , contains vivid images of the introduction of bus transportation to Los Angeles and the concomitant abandonment of the old rail lines. Title: Jacqueline Bacharach office records 1982-2000

The Jacqueline Bacharach Office records document late twentieth century Los Angeles transit history. By the early 1980's it became clear that the division of power and responsibilities between the Los Angeles County Transportation Commission (LACTC), local transit agencies such as the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD), and local government bodies was proving to be an obstacle to the rational and efficient development of a countywide mass transit system. The reports and office correspondence in this collection illustrate how these problems and their solutions were being formulated and developed by the LACTC. Also at this time, the LACTC and its sister transit agencies were preparing to re-introduce rail lines as part of the mass transit system of Los Angeles County. Samples of the reports and studies generated at the early stages of these projects are represented here.
