E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, Academy Award winning lyricist created the lyrics for the Academy Award winning film , as well as the Broadway shows , , and . Among his principal collaborators were Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Burton Lane, Arthur Schwartz and Jerome Kern. He died in Los Angeles in 1981. The collection is primarily business papers, scripts, research notes, notes for lyrics and production ideas from 1929 to 1981. Papers deal mainly with the professional life of Harburg. His political ideology and opinions can be seen in his lyrics, research notes and clippings files. Though there is little mention of his being blacklisted in 1945, his attitudes on government and politics indicates how he may have fallen victim to the McCarthyites and the House Un-American Activities Committee. Title: Paul Ashford papers, 1890-1958 (bulk 1920-1946)

The Paul Ashford papers contain mainly notes, lyrics, musical arrangements, and scores for a variety of folk music collected and compiled by Ashford from the 1920s through 1952. In particular, there is a large set of both temperance and drinking songs from the 1920s and 1930s. The collection includes a small amount of correspondence from notable folk musicians and enthuisasts, Ivar Haglund, Earl Robinson, and Pete Seeger. There are also manuscript scores of Ashford's own compositions, as well as manuscripts of his various writings, including radio broadcast scripts, drafts of a novel, and music criticism. A scrapbook in Box 5 contains clippings of music reviews written by Ashford, mainly for "The Town Crier," a Seattle publication, as well as some original artwork, correspondence, and recordings. A separate accession includes a single letter to Ashford from University of Washington professor, Glenn Hughes, dated 1929, in which he thanks Ashford for a favorable review and encourages him to continue writing poetry, along with offers to assist in getting Ashford's writing published.

Title: John Collier papers

The papers consist of correspondence, subject files, writings, memoranda and reports, research materials, and miscellanea, documenting the personal life and professional career of John Collier. His service with the American Indian Defense Association (A.I.D.A.), as United States Commissioner of Indian Affairs, and as a teacher and author is detailed. Correspondence files include materials with leading political, literary, and social figures. Drafts of books, articles, essays, reviews, and poetry are supplemented with extensive subject files and research materials. Files relating to the Institute of Ethnic Affairs include substantive correspondence and memoranda. The papers of anthropologist Laura Thompson, Collier's second wife, are also arranged in the papers, and date from 1945-1956.

Title: Archie Green papers, 1944-2009.

The collection includes correspondence, subject files, research materials, writings, photographs, and other materials pertaining chiefly to Green's professional activities, circa 1955-2008. Materials reflect Green's interests in the study of folklore; occupational folklore, with special emphasis on songs relating to textile workers, railroad workers, coal miners, and cowboys; labor history, especially the 1919 riot in Centralia, Wash.; early country (hillbilly) music; sound recording archives; folk musicians; and production and collection of sound recordings. There are also materials relating to Green's research and teaching activities and participation in professional associations, music and folklore festivals, and the faculty labor union at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The additions to the papers of Archie Green build on and expand the topical content of the original deposit. Beyond the subjects already described, notable topics represented in these additions include Green's lobbying efforts on behalf of the Citizens' Committee for an American Folklife Foundation (CCAFF) to establish the American Folklife Center; songs relating to oil field, longshore, and cannery workers, and to the Homestead Strike; songs and history of wobblies and the Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.); the 1913 Wheatland, Calif., riot; folk art, labor art, and artists, and artists; unions and working culture of shipwrights, pile drivers, millwrights and carpenters, loggers, and maritime, steel, sheetmetal, and timber workers; labor landmarks throughout the United States, but especially in the San Francisco Bay area; the history of federal government support for folk life; the role of public sector/applied folklore in the preservation of folklore and cultural conservation; the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Project; and graphic art representations of folklore and labor themes, including depictions of folk hero John Henry. In these projects, he worked with many folklorists, musicologists, and others. Green collected a wide variety of materials on folk and labor themes, including art and music; newsletters; pamphlets, bibliographies; work songs; work tales; and posters, clippings, and other ephemera. His papers also include the extensive collections of labor lyrics and musical scores and pamphlets on socialism and labor topics from John Neuhaus. Other materials in the additions document Green's teaching career at the University of Texas; his participation in organizations dedicated to the study of labor history and culture, such as the Fund for Labor Culture & History and the San Francisco State University Labor Archives and Research Center; collaboration with John Neuhaus on the "Big Red Songbook" and Peter Tamony on etymology of labor slang terms; and a long relationship with the University of North Carolina, where he gave lectures, organized conferences, and led fundraising for the John Edwards Memorial Foundation Fund and an occupational folklore fellowship. There is some documentation of Green's personal finances, especially his budget for books, records, and journals, and some biographical materials. Audio and video recordings from the original deposit and the additions are filed together in Series 10. Some of the individuals, organizations, and events represented in this collection appear as access points in the online catalog terms section of this finding aid but researchers are advised to keyword search throughout the finding aid for additional name, place and subject terms.

Papers of Millard Lampell (1919-1997), a writer for radio, television, motion pictures, and the stage. Lampell's plays, such as The Wall (1960) which he adapted from a John Hersey novel, include progressive script drafts, research correspondence, financial information, clippings, and photographs. Also included are correspondence, music, and production information relating to performances of his folk cantata "The Lonesome Train," first written for Columbia Presents Corwin (CBS). In the motion picture files are correspondence, scripts, and clippings for Chance Meeting (Para., 1960), Escape from East Berlin (MGM, 1962), Saturday's Hero (Col., 1951), and several documentaries and unproduced titles. Award-winning scripts for East Side/West Side (CBS) and Hallmark Hall of Fame (NBC) are included with a small group of television papers. The remainder of the collection includes general correspondence (some concerning his wartime broadcasting for the Army Air Force) and recordings of performances with Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and the Almanac Singers and a work by Earl Robinson. The processed portion of this collection is summarized above, dates 1936-1966, and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1939-1997 and are described below.
