Cowper reports his fears for the health of his friend Mrs. Unwin: "She is the chief Blessing I have met with in my Journey since the Lord was pleased to call me, and I hope the Influence of her edifying and Excellent Example will never leave me." The letter incorporates the verses of the hymn "Walking with God" which he had begun to compose "Yesterday Morning before Daybreak, but fell asleep at the End of the two first Lines, when I awakened again the third and fourth were whisper'd to my Heart in a way which I have often experienced." The hymn "Walking with God" is based upon Genesis 5:24, and appeared as hymn No. 3 in John Newton's "Olney Hymns" (1779).

20 letters to John Bacon and 1 to Mrs. Bacon; Olney and other places, 1782-1788.
Manuscript copies, in the hand of John Bacon, Jr., of 21 personal letters by John Newton to Newton's close friend John Bacon. The letters primarily contain routine social correspondence, such as descriptions of travel through England and updates on the health of mutual acquaintances, as well as spiritual musings, especially on Newton's own unworthiness. The letters also contain several references to Newton's friend, William Cowper, and Cowper's friend, Mary Unwin. Dos-a-dos, the volume contains two unsigned English hymns titled Hymn for Sabbath morning and Ascension. At the beginning of the manuscript is a short introduction by Bacon, Jr., providing a brief biography of Newton and mentioning his uncertainty about how his father became acquainted with Newton.

Advising him against publishing John Newton's introduction to Cowper's Poems, and discussing proof corrections to the volume. " ... it appears to me wrong to insert a preface which has a direct tendency to prevent readers of very different sentiments from the writer of it from turning over a single page, and which infalibly [sic] prejudice the critics against the work before they have read a line, and their judgment has no small influence on the success of poetical composition. Those who are acquainted with Mr. N's genius and worth and are of his sentiments [will] indeed be disposed to read and be benefited, but I do not think this a sufficient motive for giving up the public at large...
