Material collected by Gordon for a proposed biography of Cocke includes ca. 300 pages of notes and transcripts of Cocke's correspondence with Thomas Jefferson, Joseph Carrington Cabell and others; Gordon's own correspondence regarding Cocke; and miscellaneous material including a bibliography, a list of Cocke's contemporaries and relatives, an outline of chapters for the proposed book, and five clippings on the James River and Kanawha Canal. Of interest is material pertinent to the freed slaves sent by General Cocke to Liberia including a letter from Elliott Cresson to W. McLain introducing Cocke; letters from Monrovia from James, Peyton, and Diannia Skipwith; and newspaper articles on Liberia 1941-1948. In his letter to Cocke, 1838 January 30, James Skipwith describes their passage on the ship "Caroline Steavens," homesickness, fear that he will not earn enough to redeem his wife and children, desire to join a church, and hopes to meet in heaven if he dies. In a letter to Cocke,1838 January 30, (that appears to be a continuation of one printed in Randall Miller's "Dear Master") Peyton Skipwith requests goods; describes the imprisonment of a Francis Clarke for attempted murder of his wife, and the drowning of two other men after a snake got in their boat; and sends greetings to family and friends. In a letter to 1834 February 12, Diannia Skipwith reports on her safe arrival, the death of her sister Felicia, her dislike of Liberia, her desire for an education and her hopes to return to Virginia, the contrast between wet and dry seasons, and greetings to family and friends. The collection also contains clipped signatures of Daniel Webster and John Quincy Adams.

White Foundation lecture by William Draper Lewis; a weekly radio broadcast of University life; Institute of Public Affairs reception; Summer Quarter musical program, reception and dance; an "At Home" for President and Mrs. Newcomb; a lecture by William E. Dodd, U. S. ambassador to German, 1937; a lecture series by Dr. Robert Russell Wicks of Princeton University, 1936, Dean Lynn Harold Hough of Drew theological Seminary, 1937, and the Rt. Rev. R. E. L. Strider, Bishop of West Virginia, 1938 sent by Religious Exercises Committee chairman Armistead C. Gordon, Jr.a lecture on the problems of Inter-American cooperation by Ezequiel Padilla; a student volunteer convention; a tea for visiting high school principals; an Assembly of Professors meeting to hear a report from the Committee on Contractual Relations; a meeting of the American Association of University Professors; the Dulaney Book Exchange; a U. Va. employer's help wanted card, and a list of movies, concerts, exhibitions and lectures for the 1950/1951 school year. The collection also cotains a form letter sent to Hench by the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company of Boston, 1937, soliciting the purchase of automobile insurance and noting that his name as a "careful driver" had been suggested by George B. Eager of the Law School. The collection also contains a Founder's Day 1907 announcement, possibly collected by Hench.

Miss Rees, Tate and Princess Troubetzkoy enclose poems. Rawlings and Tate comment upon Ellen Glasgow, and Tate remarks on: Hervey Allen, Stringfellow Barr, James Branch Cabell, Hart Crane, William Faulkner, France in the late 1920's, the Southern Writers Convention, U. Va., 1931, and evaluates Mrs. Tunstall's book of poems A white sail set. Other correspondents are: Edwin Anderson Alderman, Donald Davison, Armistead Chuchill Gordon, Leigh Hanes, Margaret Mitchell, Caroline Gordon Tate, Pierre Troubetzkoy, Irwin Wallace, James Southall Wilson, and editors and publishers of various poetry magazines of the 1920's. Scrapbooks, 1921-51 & 1923-59, contain clippings of Mrs. Tunstall's poems and their reviews, of her speeches and talks, of her reviews of other author's works, Christmas cards, 1932-57, containing original poems, invitations to and membership cards of various literary societies.
