Hodges records his memories of growing up in Pittsburgh, Penn.; family members including his parents Fletcher and Margaret Hodges and brothers John A. and Fletcher Hodges III; attending boarding school at Kent in Connecticut and college at Harvard (Class of 1953); marriage to and life with Eloise Weld Hodges; birth of his children Arthur, Jr., Susanna, and Alexander; work as an investment consultant in Boston; annual family vacations; social engagements with Weld and Warren family members, among others; and general life milestones. Also included are reminiscences, short stories, and vacation summaries written by Eloise Weld Hodges, photographs, and family histories and genealogies. Diaries kept by Arthur C. Hodges, which begin in 1979, describe work; family events and social gatherings including children's and grandchildren's activities; college and family reunions; leisure activities; hiking portions of the Appalachian Trail; political, social, and economic news; improvements to the home in Essex; and births and deaths of family members. Included in the diaries are newspaper clippings, letters from family members, photographs, and yearly economic outlook and investment review for Hodges' company, Welch & Forbes.

The Ball mss., 1873-1981, consist of the correspondence, family papers, and items collected by George Alexander Ball, 1862-1955, his wife, Frances Emily (Woodworth) Ball, 1872- 1958, and their daughter, Elisabeth Woodworth Ball, 1897- 1982. Biographical materials include those for Elisabeth Woodworth Ball, Lall G. Montgomery, and Dugald Stewart Walker. With the biographical material in a folio folder is a bookplate drawing for Elisabeth Ball in 1918 by Walker. Additional materials include a journal of a trip to Panama in 1913, miscellaneous (items) including a child's school slate, miscellaneous - "About Books" (about the Ball Book Collection), miscellaneous art pieces including glass lantern and rotary slides, Chinese cut-outs, and an exotic scrapbook of the 18th century, miscellaneous subjects collected on adventures/travels, bells, rides, and trees (chiefly printed), notebooks (catalogs of the Ball Book Collection), photographs, printed (book sale catalogs), and writings of Elisabeth Woodworth Ball.

Title: Philip S. Hench Walter Reed Yellow Fever Collection 1806-1995

The Philip S. Hench Walter Reed Yellow Fever Collection documents the work of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission, the legacy of the commission’s discoveries, the lives of individuals who were connected to the commission, and twentieth century campaigns to shape public memory of the commission. Items in the collection date from 1800 to 1998, with the bulk of the items dating from 1864 to 1974. A wide range of formats are represented in the collection including, but not limited to the following: articles, artifacts, audiocassettes, bills (legislative records), biographies, charts (graphic documents), correspondence, diaries, editorials, interviews, journals (periodicals), magazines, maps, medical records, military records, negatives (photographic), notes, photographs, reports, reprints, scrapbooks, and speeches. Unique materials in the collection are supplemented with copies of original documents and photographs housed in other institutions (e.g the U.S. National Archives). Most of the materials in the collection were collected or created by Nobel laureate Philip Showalter Hench while researching the history of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission.
