This small collection includes documents pertaining to pensions and land claims, dated in the 1850s; two letters from Sergeant Hector Shields ( - ) of the 25th Infantry, written from Buffalo, N.Y., in 1814, describing the Battle of Chippewa; and a letter from John Rodgers (1773-1838) to Edmund Pendleton Gaines (1777-1849) requesting furlough for three army privates, 1814. There is a copy of letters from Commander Thomas Macdonough (1783-1825) and General Alexander Macomb (1782-1841) to the secretaries of the Navy and War describing the battles of Lake Champlain and Plattsburg (September 1814). There are fragments of rosters for the 40th infantry at Fort McClary, 1814, kept by Sergeant Richard Shapleigh ( - ). The collection also contains a report from the Office of the Commissary General of Prisoners detailing the harsh treatment of American prisoners by the British and orders for retaliation against British prisoners, appeals by British prisoners to Masonic groups for aid in returning home at war's end in 1815, and a letter written by a British sea captain thanking the people of Salem, Mass., for their good treatment of him while he was a prisoner. The bulk of the collection consists of typed copies and photostats of thirteen letters from Captain Rufus McIntire (1784-1866) to John Holmes (1773-1843) of Alfred, Me. (the originals of which are located at the New York State Library).
