Eastin's travel journey from 1 May - 19 August 1849 describes his trip from Henderson, Kentucky to the gold mines in California via the Oregon Trail and other routes. He notes stops at Forts Kearny, Laramie, and Bridger, Salt Lake City, and Valley of a Thousand Springs; scenery; contacts with other emigrants and Indians; illnesses, especially cholera; and hardships.

The bulk of the records is correspondence and most is addressed to Bibb in his capacity as territorial Governor or Commander-in-Chief of the territorial militia. Subjects discussed include Indian affairs, finances of the new territory, allegations of corruption among local officials, the French colony at Demopolis, the organization of militia units and the general functioning of the territorial government. Prominent correspondencts include Bolling Hall, Felix Grundy, John Williams Walker, Thomas Eastin, Samuel Dale and William Crawford.

Record of his journey from Kentucky by way of Independence, Mo., the Blue and Platte Rivers, South Pass, Ft. Bridger, Salt Lake City, Bear River, and along the Humboldt. The journal ends abruptly as Eastin and a small party take a cut-off above the river. Extensive comments on Indians, geography, flora and fauna, diseases, etc.
