Also included are 2 newspaper essays about Hauptmann: 1 from Felix Hollaender entitled "Bei Gerhart Hauptmann in Rapallo" (Berliner Tageblatt, 1928) and 1 from Robert Faesi entitled "Gerhart Hauptmann. Zwei Erinnerungsbilder" (1956; newspaper not noted). The latter was clipped for Alma Mahler, presumably by Margarete Hauptmann.

Also included is a montage of various condolence telegrams upon Mahler's death (photocopies), with Strauss's forming the principal part.

Papers pertaining to Heuser's studies of Gerhart J.R. Hauptmann (1862-1946), the German dramatist of social protest and early exponent of realism. There is correspondence both with Hauptmann and with others prominent in literary and academic fields, giving their views on Hauptmann. The correspondence is roughly in two groups; letters written to Heuser during his trip to Germany in 1923; and letters concerning Hauptmann's visit to the United States to deliver the oration at the exercises held at Columbia University in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of Goethe, 1932. There are twenty letters from Hauptmann and 59 letters from his wife Margarete. The correspondence with the Hauptmann family continues up to 1957. There are twelve boxes of manuscripts and notes on Hauptmann; and five boxes of mounted clippings and printed extracts. Among the miscellaneous correspondence are letters from H.L. Mencken, Auguste Forel, Albert Schweitzer, Tristram Coffin, and Nicholas Murray Butler. Also, photographs relating to Hauptmann.

Strelow, Liselotte, 1908-1981. Portraits, landscapes and interior views.

Collection includes examples of various subjects photographed by Strelow: portraits, including actors in stage productions, landscapes, street scenes and interior views. Her psychological approach to portraiture captures the subject in his or her own environment or type of occupation. She poses Henry Moore among sculpture; Jean Cocteau seated with the suspenseful look of an intellectual; Margarete Hauptmann (a hat model) wearing a hat; Gottfried Benn, the poet, with an intense close-up; Hans Pfitzner playing the piano. Several of these appear in Strelow's book "Das manipulierte Menschenbildnis oder Die Kunst, fotogen zu sein", Düsseldorf : Econ, 1961. Other identified portraits include Ewald Mataré, Carl Zuckmayer, Wiet Palar, Marianne Hoppe, Ernst Deutsch, Gerda Maurus, Elisabeth Flickenschildt and Werner Kraus.
