Chiefly correspondence to and from family members, among whom are: John McAllister, Sr.; his wife Eliza; their son John, Jr.; his wife Eliza Young (E.Y. McAllister); and their son William Young (W.Y. McAllister). Other correspondents include Frances W. Stevenson (Fanny McAllister) and Agnes (McAllister) Craig and her husband Robert. Agnes Craig's letters are particularly explicit on religious subjects. One important group of letters is from William's parents while he attended the Mount Airy Lyceum in Germantown, Pa. Topics in the letters relate chiefly to family relationships, religious subjects (Presbyterian), and some business affairs. Includes a small group of receipts and statements of agreement.

Title: Letters, 1834-1835.

Thirteen letters and three journals related to William Young McAllister, son of a prominent merchant, John McAllister of Philadelphia, Pa. William was travelling with his cousin, Alexander Young, south to St. Augustine, Fla. The letters are chiefly from his father, who offers advice on things to do, people to meet, and sight-seeing; advice given with his son's future career in business in mind. The three journals contain descriptions of Southern customs and people, particularly in Florida. One journal is entirely devoted to St. Augustine.

Collection contains personal and business records compiled by the McAllister family of Philadelphia between 1803-1935. Among the items are a daybook used by John McAllister Sr., letters, postcards, a menu, notice of meetings, committee reports, invitations, printed billheads from various firms, and a memorial speech for John McAllister, Jr., that contains biographical information about him. A number of undated photographs depict various family members. One photo, dated 1854, shows the shop front of the family store. Two pencil sketches show John McAllister Sr.'s house. Several trade cards, advertisements, and two trade catalogs of the firm are included. They note that the McAllisters manufactured spectacles, spyglasses, microscopes, magic lanterns, thermometers, gunther scales, protractors, surveying chains, and tape measures, as well as other optical and mathematical instruments and apparatus. The daybook lists daily sales figures from the time "Sales Commenced Aug. 30th 1803, Tuesday" through Tuesday December 31, 1805. Typical listings are: "Silver Spects $6;" "Sword Cane $4;" "Whip & Ink Stands $2;" "Spy Glass & Microscope, $19;" "Opera Glass, $1.50;" "Pistol Tinder Box, Spects, & Whip, $3.75." Includes daily, weekly, monthly, and annual totals. Also includes a list of "The Profits of the Whips from 1st July 1805--Germantown Manufacture" and "Family Expences 1805."

Papers, 1788-1891, consisting chiefly of family letters of the Young and McAllister families, including the correspondence of John McAllister, Jr. (1786-1877), Eliza Melville Young McAllister (1790-1853), John Allister McAllister (b. 1822), Sarah Allister McAllister Grant (1819-1870), Wardale Gaskell McAllister (1829-1874), William Young McAllister (b. 1812) and Agnes Young Craig (1785-1866). These letters are historically significant because they highlight such topics at Civil War hospitals, family matters such as sickness and indebtedness, extensive travel, household tasks, religion and weather. In particular, these letters discuss the travels of Agnes and William Young McAllister in Europe and the career of Dr. Anna Mitchell McAllister (1849-1922), one of the earliest women physicians in Philadelphia. The collection includes a notebook of hers from the Women's Medical College of Philadelphia. The collection also includes several groups of estate papers, including the estates of James Conchy (died c. 1812), William Young (1755-1829?), John McAllister, Jr. (1786-1877) and his wife, Elizabeth Melville Young McAllister (1790-1853); family history notes, receipts, financial and real estate papers relating to the Rockland Manufacturing Company (1825, 1854) and the Lehigh Crane Iron Company (1848-1862).
