Correspondence, consultations, surveys, writings, printed material, and other papers of Edwin Richard Weinerman. Material primarily reflects Weinerman's interest in public health and deals with his activities both as a consultant and administrator with various public and private health careorganizations, including the U. S. Public Health Service, Permanente Health Plan, American Public Health Association, and the Yale-New Haven Hospital. A significant part of the collection also relates to Weinerman's social and political activities, especially his concern over dangers of air pollution, nuclear warfare and radiation poisoning, and his opposition to the House Committee on Un-American Activities and the Levering Act which required loyalty oaths as a condition for medical licensure. The papers also include notebooks and course papers from his own studies at Harvard and New York University (1945-1948) as well as teaching materials from the University of California. His professional program is documented in grant applications (1963-1972), two speeches and letters written in preparation for his trip abroad in 1970, collected works (articles), and curriculum vitae. Also in the papers are letters of condolence and a transcript and audio tapes of the memorial service at Yale University following his death in 1970. These papers form part of the Contemporary Medical Care and Health Policy Collection.

Leroy E. Burney papers, 1931-1978

Chiefly office files from Burney's tenure as vice-president and executive director of the Milbank Memorial Fund, 1970-1977. (The fund is an organization dedicated to studying and promoting the effective delivery of health services.) Included in the papers are correspondence, memoranda, minutes of meetings, budget summaries, reports and the records for three programs supported by the Fund: the African Medical Education Program, the Commission for the Study of Higher Education for Public Health, and the Human Resources Development Project. Burney's activities in various organizations and commissions devoted to health care are documented in correspondence and files on these groups. Of particular interest are the files for the controversial President's Committee on Health Education, created by President Nixon in 1971. Burney's writings include texts of speeches, reports, drafts of articles, and offprints (1937-1976). Significant corrspondents in the papers are Florence Kavaler, Cecil G. Sheps, David Willis, Lester Breslow and Elliot L. Richardson. There is also a small amount of biographical material including photographs, family correspondence, biographical sketches, clippings and awards. Papers collected by Arthur J. Viseltear in connection with his research on the development of the American Public Health Association's Medical Care Section. Included are relevant records from the organization (1940-1957) documenting its research into the question of incorporating medical care into public health with special reports on medical care for the indigent, rural medicine, and relations between hospitals and health departments. In 1948 the advocates of medical care succeeded with the establishment of a Medical Care Section of the APHA and papers of the Section (1948-1972) are also in the collection. The bulk of these records are from 1967 to 1972. Included are correspondence, memoranda, minutes, texts of papers presented at annual meetings and other documents, as well as the files of fourteen administrative and subject committees within the Medical Care Section. Viseltear also contributed his own research and interview notes together with journal articles and printed materials related to the question of medical care and public health, which form a useful source of background material. Major correspondents in the papers include Reginald M. Atwater, Lester Breslow, Dean A. Clark, Haven Emerson, Isidore S. Falk, Franz Goldmann, Wilton L. Halverson, and C.-E. A. Winslow.
