Title: Student Leaders Oral Histories 2010-2012

Digital audio and video recordings of interviews conducted with former NC State student leaders as part of the Student Leadership Initiative. The 2010 Cathy Sterling interviews contain audio only, while the remainder of the interviews also include video. Interviews were conducted by Genya O'Gara, Jonathan Holloway, Samantha Rich, and Kelly Murray beginning in 2010. Contains oral histories gathered as part of the Student Leadership Initiative, a project undertaken by the Special Collections Research Center to chronicle the experiences and impact of former North Carolina State University students. The collection of the histories began in 2010 and is ongoing. This is an artificial collection, and is maintained and updated by Special Collections Research Center staff.

Two volumes of letters of tribute and appreciation to William Brantley Aycock (1915- ), chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1957-1964, and Kenan Professor of Law, 1966-1986. Letters were written on the occasion of Aycock's resignation as Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964, and after Aycock retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Law School in 1986.

The collection includes correspondence, congressional and campaign files, speeches and other writings, notes, photographs, sound recordings, and other materials documenting the personal and professional life of Frank Porter Graham. Included are materials reflecting his service as president of the University of North Carolina, 1930-1949; U.S. senator from North Carolina, 1949-1950; United Nations representative in the dispute between India and Pakistan; and in various other capacities during the New Deal, World War II, and the Cold War. The papers reflect Graham's interests and activities in education, race relations and civil rights, labor arbitration, southern regional development, international mediation, and other southern and national liberal concerns. The addition of 1994 includes materials relating to "Dr. Frank: The Life and Times of Frank Porter Graham" (1994), a documentary biography film by John B. Wilson, Jr., and Martin Clark for the Arts and Sciences Foundation of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina Center for Public Television. Included are logs documenting contents of video tapes, typed transcriptions of parts of interviews with Frank Porter Graham and others, and video tapes in various formats. Among the topics covered are civil rights; race relations; education, with emphasis on Graham's career at the University of North Carolina; and Graham's political activities and government service. Included are interviews with several persons involved in the bloody 1950 senatorial campaign. Persons important in these materials include Warren Ashby, William B. Aycock, Augustus Merrimon Burns, Julius L. Chambers, John Hope Franklin, William C. Friday, Alexander Heard, Douglass Hunt, Charles Kuralt, William Edward Leuchtenburg, Benjamin Elijah Mays, Claude Pepper, Julian M. Pleasants, Julian M., John L. Sanders, Terry Sanford, J. The Senior Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the senior academic affairs administrator of the University of North Carolina (System). Established in 1932, the System initially included the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina State College in Raleigh, and Woman's College in Greensboro. During the 1960s, the number of schools in the System doubled to include campuses at Asheville, Charlotte, and Wilmington. In 1972 the System was reorganized and expanded to include sixteen schools. The Office of the Vice President was created in 1951 and was then called simply Vice President; subsequently it was called Provost, Vice President and Provost, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, Vice President for Academic Affairs (in 1964), Vice President for Academic Affairs and Senior Vice President, and Senior Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs (beginning in 1995). The records include correspondence and other files relating to academic programs and administrative matters at the sixteen campuses of the University system. Of particular interest are files related to the 1989-1990 controversy over alleged rules violations in the men's basketball program at North Carolina State University. Individuals who have held this position and who figure significantly in these records include William M. Wyburn, Donald B. Anderson, William Smith Wells, Raymond H. Dawson, Roy Carroll, and William F. Little.

The collection also contains some images of the University of North Carolina, including a set of 35mm color copy slides of the October 1961 University Day visit of President John F. Kennedy. A few North Carolina coastal and mountain locations are also depicted.
