The Senior Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs is the senior academic affairs administrator of the University of North Carolina (System). Established in 1932, the System initially included the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina State College in Raleigh, and Woman's College in Greensboro. During the 1960s, the number of schools in the System doubled to include campuses at Asheville, Charlotte, and Wilmington. In 1972 the System was reorganized and expanded to include sixteen schools. The Office of the Vice President was created in 1951 and was then called simply Vice President; subsequently it was called Provost, Vice President and Provost, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, Vice President for Academic Affairs (beginning in 1964), Vice President for Academic Affairs and Senior Vice President (beginning in 1974), and Senior Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs (beginning in 1995).

The records reflect the duties and responsibilities of the academic affairs administrator and his relationship to the academic officers of the system's constituent institutions. By 1972 these duties and responsibilities included assisting the President in the following areas: (1) all academic personnel actions, including the development of system-wide academic personnel policies; (2) the review of academic programs, including modifications to and expansions of existing programs as well as new programs; (3) general administrative direction of computing initiatives such as the North Carolina Educational Computer Service; (4) participation in the work of various University system advisory groups and councils concerned with academic programs and personnel; (5) preparation of various reports and testimony needed by the General Assembly in connection with the University's budget and other legislative requests; (6) the review of contract and grant proposals directly affecting academic programs; and (7) representing the President in special activities of importance to the University, such as membership on committees of the State Board of Education, the Department of Public Instruction, and the Research Triangle Institute.
