Hale describes life in Camp Denison; transport down the Ohio River; life in West Virginia camps including illness, flooding, daily routine and interaction with civilians; work as hospital orderly; guerilla warfare against bushwhackers; foraging; scouting; Crook's expedition against the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad; Hunter's raid to Lynchburg; Of interest are very brief references to "snake hunters" in [West] Virginia clubbing any "secech" they find; hanging a civilian who shot at the soldiers and other incidents involving both friendly and hostile civilians; skirmishes at Chapmansville, Princeton and Fayetteville; expedition to the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad and the destruction at Wytheville; a drunken fight in Co. C. in which one soldier hit General A. N. Duffie; capture of Lewisburg; and hot springs.

The collection contains correspondence and financial papers of Buford who, as a partner in the firms of Buford and Mitchell and Buford and Strickland, supervised the building of the Southwest Virginia turnpike between Botetourt and the Tennessee border in 1848-1849, and of the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad from Lynchburg west, 1851-1861. Most of the correspondence deals with hiring hands, and contracting for supplies. With these are check rolls for black and Irish workers, two contracts with the Irish Emigrant Society, turnpike specifications, and notebooks of expenses and cost account for each railroad section. Buford served as captain of Co. C of the 42nd Virginia Regiment. His war papers include medical discharges for company members, and letters about the provisioning of the company and the Valley campaign of 1861. Of interest is a letter from a cook at the University of Virginia soldiers' hospital.

There is also a copy, 1974, of a letter, 1954 Feb. 21, Charlottesville, Oscar Wilder Underwood to William Rogers answering questions about his father. The collection also contains a receipt, 1861 May 29, the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad Co. at Saltville, Va. through agent Charles Campbell to Capt. Jones for 25 boxes of bacon to be sent to William Lewis Cabell.
