Papers of U. S. Ambassador W. Nathaniel Howell contain drafts of his dissertation "The Soviet Union and the Kurds" and a typescript of his book "Siege crisis leadership: the survival of the United States Embassy Kuwait" co-authored with Rebecca A. Culbertson. Dissertation research material regarding the "Kurdish Problem, " contains letters, newspapers, audio tapes, videotapes, photographs, publications, journals and other reference materials. The material primarily covers the problems of the Kurds in the Soviet Union (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia), Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. There is related material on the history of Iraq, the Soviet Union and the Baath Party. Of interest are 1965 interviews with Ismet Chériff Vanly, translations of T. F. Aristova articles fom "Sovetskaia Etnografiia," and miscellaneous articles on the Kurdish Question from Soviet and French periodicals including issues of Revoliutsionnyi Vostok, Moscow, 1933. Foreign service papers include speeches and public statements, scrapbooks of clippings from Kuwaiti newspapers concerning his tenure as United States Ambassador; a photograph album of a 4th of July Reception in Kuwait, 1989, and photographs of atrocities committed during the Iraqi occupation, 1990-1991. The papers also contain an interview with Howell by Kara Sundlun concerning the potential U. Va campus in Qatar; a Dateline 29 newscast on the U.Va.-Qatar initiative containing a soundbite from the Sundlun interview; a discussion of the UVA-Qatar initiative with Vinay Jain for WTJU; and a videotape [narrated in Arabic?] containing random footage of Washington, D. C. and U. Va., including a lecture on national security given after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and before the Gulf War. Correspondents include George Bush, Marshall Coleman and Aldous Huxley as well as many foreign service friends and colleagues. The collection also contains his secondary school records including his elementary school report cards and high school diploma.

Foreign service papers include daily calendars, 1979-1989; speeches and public statements; photographs from diplomatic receptions in Kuwait, photographs of the Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War, 1975-1976, and photographs of activities at the U.S. embassy during the Iraqi occupation, 1990-1991. There is also a 1985 address to American Muslims and a few items pertaining to Israel and the PLO, circa 1980. The papers also contain two audiocassettes taped shortly after Howell returned from the 1991 siege of the U. S. embassy in Kuwait. An interview and a global press conference with KQV news in Pittsburgh discuss the siege, Saddam Hussein, and the future of Kuwait. At the Highlands International Issues Forum he discusses ethnic and religious conficts in the Middle East; cyclical religious fundamentalism; nomads vs city dwellers; Kurds; Saddam Hussein and the invasion of Kuwait; the interests of the U.S. in Israel, the prevention of conflict, and oil access; and goals of the U.S. in the Gulf War . The papers also contain videocassettes of interviews including a March 2005 episode of the TV show "Tout en Français" in which Howell as Director of the Institute for Global Research Policy discuss the twinning of Charlottesville with a French city; an untitled video contain a 2003 interview with Kuwaiti businessman Abdul Husain Marafie; and "What's at stake?" a Virginia Currents election special, October 2004, discussing key political issues, particularly Iraq. In addition there are calling cards; photographs of family trips, 1975 and 2001, and of student days at the University of Virginia.

Also of interest are primary materials collected by Howell on the Kurdish National Movement, 1961-1965; papers from a Peruvian conference "at the threshold of the millenium" including an article by Dr. Salman Akhtar; an affadavit in the case of Clifford Acree vs the Republic of Iraq; and papers concerning the Kuwait Dipllomacy Institute for Kuwaiti diplomats studying at the University of Virginia. Foreign service papers include address and appointment books; photographs from diplomatic receptions in Kuwait; photographs of U.S. Central command visits to Pakistan; memorabilia; and photographs of activities at the U.S. embassy during the Iraqi occupaiton, 1990-1991. Of interest are photographs and notes on the origin of the Carter doctrine and the Camp David Accords. There are sixteen audiocassettes from the University of Virgia confeconference on the Liberation of Kuwait. Speakers included John T. Casteen, Lawrence Eagleburger and H. E. Shaikh Saud Nasir Al-Sabah. Four of the cassettes were produced by the University of Virginia as "The liberation of Kuwait-Dawning of a New World Order." Twelve of the cassettes are Howell's personal tapings of the speakers and events which included additional speakers. The papers include videotapes "Real life anecdotes on tricks & tips of Arabic" and "Al-Hashemi II," construction progress on the world's biggest wooden sailing boat. Papers also include videodisks of a Marafie Foundation USA conference in Kuwait, 2003, at which Howell spoke, a trip to Kuwait and Iraq, 2003, and a trip to Kuwait, 2005. Additional photographs include the Portsmouth homecoming celebration, 1991; the Beiruit Civil War; the Iraqui invasion of Kuwait; and the USS Deyo (DD-989).
