Title: John Ehle Papers, 1918-1993

John Marsden Ehle Jr., author of novels and works of non-fiction, was born in Asheville, N.C., and has lived most of his adult life in Winston-Salem. He served as special assistant to North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford, 1963-1964, and has been instrumental in establishing and furthering many significant educational, desegregation, and anti-poverty projects. He is married to British actress Rosemary Harris. The collection includes materials documenting both the literary career and public service activities of John Ehle. Literary materials include correspondence, clippings, and financial items relating to Ehle's novels and other works, as well as notes, drafts, and galleys. Family items include correspondence of Ehle's parents and a few items relating to Rosemary Harris. Other materials relate to Ehle's work with various public and private institutions. These include files generated in the course of Ehle's work in the Governor's Office, especially his efforts on behalf of the North Carolina School of the Arts and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. There are also files relating to the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Federation for the Arts and Humanities, Duke University, and the Penland School of Crafts. Photographs and audio-visual materials include family photographs and photographs by Ehle, Jim Wallace, and others of civil rights activists and protests in Chapel Hill, N.C., and other locations compiled for use in Ehle's book ; audiodisks of radio shows that Ehle wrote or acted in; tapes of interviews done for various books; and filmstrips, chiefly on North Carolina history, which Ehle produced, sometimes in collaboration with others. A few items relate to Rosemary Harris. The Addition of December 2010 is a journal with detailed entries, 1962-1964, about John Ehle's work as special assistant to North Carolina Governor Terry Sanford, his writing career, the foundations and projects he supported, and his personal life. Title: General Faculty and Faculty Council of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Records, 1799-2011

The university's earliest , adopted by its Board of Trustees in 1795, defined the duties and rights of the faculty. Formal faculty meetings have been held since at least 1799; the amended adopted by the trustees in December 1799 included guidelines for the conduct of such meetings. Throughout the antebellum period, the faculty was responsible for enforcing social as well as academic regulations and for handling cases of student misconduct. After 1875 the faculty assumed an increasing role in establishing policies governing educational activities and the awarding of degrees by the university. The , originally titled , was adopted by the General Faculty in 1947 and has been amended numerous times. In 1950 the General Faculty authorized the creation of the Faculty Council to act as its legislative body. The council, composed of elected members from the various faculty divisions and ex-officio members from the university administration, held its first meeting on 5 January 1951. Officers of the faculty include the chair and the secretary. The university's chancellor presides over meetings of the Faculty Council. Much of the Faculty Council's work is carried on by its standing and special committees. Laws and Regulations Laws of the University Faculty Code of University Government Faculty Legislation Records include minutes of meetings of the General Faculty, 1799-2011, and of the Faculty Council, 1951-2011; files of the secretary of the faculty and of the chair of the faculty; minutes of the meetings of various faculty divisions; and files of standing and special committees. Beginning in the mid-1990s, there are scattered meeting transcripts among the minutes. There are also recordings of many General Faculty and Faculty Council meetings, 1984-2010, on 283 audiocassettes, 31 data compact discs, and three digital video discs.
