Collection comprises ledgers, account books, order forms, and other ephemera relating to the sale and purchase of cigars by the company. Materials range in date from the 1870s through the early 1900s, and it is believed that the cigar company may have changed names throughout that period. The centerpiece of the collection is a specimen book of sample cigar box labels, created by the lithographers Heppenheimer & Maurer around 1878. The specimen book includes about 115 leaves, with labels affixed on each side of the leaf; the color ranges from two colors to multiple colors per label. Account books document cigar production, purchase, and sales information. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History. Heppenheimer & Maurer was a lithography company that created box labels for cigar manufacturers to paste on the inside lid of a box of cigars. Sample books like the one in this collection were distributed to local cigar manufacturers, who could then order the labels by their designated number. Frederick Heppenheimer, from New York City, was one of the earliest and most prolific commercial lithographers. He later partnered with Louis Maurer, another well-regarded artist, to create Heppenheimer & Maurer in 1872. Maurer was one of the few cigar label lithographers who regularly signed his work. The company was one of dozens of lithography companies from this period whose art reflected everyday life in the United States.

This collection contains primarily letters from lithographer Louis Maurer to Harry T. Peters. Many letters contain personal information such as holiday greetings, invitations to social events, and thank yous for fruit baskets sent by Peters. Other letters request copies of prints and chromolithographs. Some letters, however, contain information about such lithographers as Stahl & Jaeger, and Currier & Ives. Peters solicited information from Maurer for his book on Currier & Ives.

95 original drawings, watercolors, and oil sketches, a collection of 38 lithographic proofs, most from the Heppenehimer & Maurer era, and a small wooden box housing Maurer's lithographic tools. The American Antiquarian Society holds a small archive of original works of art by or owned by the artist Louis Maurer (1832-1932). Born in Germany, Maurer arrived in the United States in 1851 and was employed by several print shops in New York City. He worked as a lithographer for T.W. Strong until 1852 when he was hired away by Currier & Ives. Maurer excelled at images of horses and sporting subjects and during the eight years he was employed by Currier & Ives, produced over one hundred prints on these subjects. After a brief time working for Major & Knapp, Maurer went into partnership with Frederick Heppenheimer to form Heppenheimer & Maurer, which existed from 1874 to 1885. The Louis Maurer Collection at the Society includes drawings of horses and other animals, layout designs for advertising, transfer drawings for larger compositions, preparatory sketches for lithographs, and a small group of photographs of Maurer's paintings. The holdings also include a small group of prints collected by Maurer, including prints by F.O.C Darley and a set of proofs for a portfolio for the 1893 World's Columbian Exhibition. Some pieces have been separated from the collection and catalogued individually, all with note "From the Louis Maurer Collection."
