Produced during a brief imperial interlude under Maximilian, 1832-67, emperor of Mexico, (1864-67), this album constitutes an early photographic record of Mexico during the French intervention directed by General Achille François Bazaine, who is featured in the first photos.

Photographs, primarily of the first centennial of the independence of Mexico, in 1910. The collection also includes a set called "Mujeres de Tehuantepec," as well as some scenes of the Decena Trágica, General Félix Díaz in Veracruz, and photographs of other figures prominent in the history of Mexico. Most photographs of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla and José María Morelos are housed with their associated documents.

Consists primarily of diplomatic correspondence covering the years of Ignacio Mariscal's tenure under Porfirio Diaz' government. Most of the letters are either reports from members of Mexican delegations, European countries, and the U.S., or recommendations of individuals for government positions. Other correspondents include politicians, ministers, and secretaries from Mexico and other countries including the U.S., Portugal, Spain, France, and El Salvador, as well as intellectuals, writers, and poets. Also includes six letters to Diaz from various individuals in Mexico, along with a reply to Francisco Bazaine, a general in the French military. Also contains personal letters and invoices from Mariscal's relatives, including Alonso, Federico, and Juan Pablo Mariscal. With these are poems translated by Ignacio Mariscal, a burial card for Mariano Mariscal, and an undated broadside, "La Situacion Actual: Un Incidente Enojoso."

Correspondence, typescripts, and assorted documents relating to the reform movement, War of the Reform and French intervention in Mexico in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The bulk of the correspondence, dated 1851-1883, includes letters from Benito Juárez, Juan Álvarez, Ezequiel Montes, Ignacio Zaragoza, Leonardo Márquez, Manuel Doblado, Antonio Balbuena, Joaquín M. Degollado, and other persons from opposing factions of the conflicts. A letter dated 1907 to Genaro García relays a copy of a letter from Juan B. Duarte concerning his experiences in the war against the French intervention in Zacatecas in late 1866 and early 1867. Typescripts include copies of correspondence of Manuel Doblado, Porfirio Díaz, José María Arteaga, and others; two reports by Achille François Bazaine dated 1865 and their translations from French to Spanish; a report on the death of Pedro Moreno of the Francisco Javier Mina expedition and the location of his remains; a diary of Miguel Miramón from March 17 to April 1, 1859, concerning military events in Veracruz; newspaper articles; hospital reports on war injuries with lists of patients; and a manuscript by León Guzmán entitled "El Partido constitucional : la, 2a y 3a época del Presidente D. Benito Juárez." Assorted documents include research notes about and a newspaper clipping by Porfirio Díaz; a diary of a journey from New York to Europe in 1859; military orders; a report in English and its Spanish translation about the imprisonment of Emperor Maximilian; a rough draft of an official document from the office of the French commandant en chef in Mexico; and a patriotic poem.

Correspondence, legal documents, and notes from 1833-1867 (bulk 1863-1864) concerned with matters of Mexican politics and government, most significantly legislation of the period known as the Reforma. The early material is comprised almost exclusively of incoming letters, among which the primary correspondent is Octaviano Muñoz Ledo, whose letters date from 1851 to 1852; many of them involve the purchase of a library for a school in Guanajuato. There are also many letters from Manuel González Cosío, governor of Zacatecas, pertaining to the Reform, the constitution, and elections. Among the later correspondents, the largest contributor is Pelagio Antonio de Labastida y Dávalos, Archibishop of Mexico, whose letters concern the Catholic Church's fight (with backing from the conservative party) against reform legislation. Matters of foreign relations, especially during the reign of Maximilian, are also discussed, mostly in letters from Juan Nepomuceno Almonte. Lares' conflict with Achille François Bazaine over the continuation of Maximilian's government is well documented in much of the later correspondence. Legal documents include laws and decrees drawn up and proposed by Lares and others. Drafts of legislation and correspondence, and other assorted notes, are also present.
