John Nichols (1745-1826) apprenticed as a printer in London with William Bowyer, and then entered into a partnership with Bowyer from 1767 until Bowyer's death in 1777. He served as printer, editor, and part-owner of the Gentleman's Magazine from 1778 until his death, and was a prolific editor and author of scholarly works.
John Nichols (1745-1826) was one of the most prominent London printers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As his business grew, he also became a respected editor, biographer, and antiquary. His most notable works include the Gentleman's Magazine, Bibliotheca Topographica Britannica, The Literary Anecdotes of the 18th Century, and a number of county histories, including the acclaimed History and Antiquities of the County of Leicester. A number of engravings in this final title were executed by Barak Longmate the younger (1768-1836), who was a longtime friend and assistant to Nichols. Longmate shared Nichols' interest in antiquarian subjects and specialized in the engraving of coats of arms.
John Nichols apprenticed as a printer with William Bowyer, and then entered into a partnership with Bowyer from 1767 until Bowyer's death in 1777. Nichols, John, 1745-1826. Accounts with the engraver Barak Longmate, 1807-1816.
Title:
Accounts with the engraver Barak Longmate, 1807-1816.
Manuscript account book kept by the London printer John Nichols, recording services rendered by the engraver Barak Longmate, from 1807 to 1816. The accounts are kept in pen and brown ink throughout, perhaps in a single hand, on paper of varying sizes. One short account of 1811 is recorded on paper with an engraved letterhead reading: "To B. Longmate, engraver in its various branches ...". Also present are small slips of paper bearing Longmate's signed receipt of payment. Affixed to the front endpapers is an engraved silhouette portrait of John Nichols. The accounts give a chronological record of Longmate's work for Nichols. The varied work includes the engraving of portraits, views, plans, and many coats of arms, as well as engraved writing, "pipe writing", and "paging". Longmate is also credited for reworking engravings, here described as "taking out", "cleaning", and "alteration". For each service, the date, activity, and cost is recorded. Example entries for 1807 include: "May 18: Writing to small view of Leicester, 4s"; and "Nov. 10: 2 View of Assembly House & four Houses at Leicester, £6 14s". At the conclusion of each batch of work, the accounts are totaled. There follows an affixed slip of paper bearing Longmate's signed receipt of payment. Nichols does not explicitly record the publications for which Longmate's engraving is done. From 1807 to 1811, his work was partly, or perhaps entirely, for inclusion in vol. 4 of Nichols' History and antiquities of the county of Leicester, published in two parts, 1810-11. Much of Longmate's subsequent engraving concerns the area of Dorset, and was probably used in John Hutchins' History and antiquities of Sherbourne, in the county of Dorset, published by Nichols in 1815. Later work is extremely varied, and difficult to pin to any given work, although some of the engravings are probably for county histories of Durham and Derby. The accounts record over 300 pieces of engraving work by Longmate, for which Nichols paid about £325. The single most expensive piece appears to be plate 98 of vol. 4 of the Leicester history, in which Longmate engraved 4 monuments, 16 small coats of arms, and 12 large coats of arms, at a cost of £9 18s.

Johnsoniana, 1712-1916 (inclusive), 1773-1836 (bulk).
This folio of inlaid manuscripts was compiled during the 1930s by an unknown collector. Almost all of the items relate at least tangentially to Samuel Johnson. The collection includes a group of seven slips of paper bearing what appear to be original unpublished anecdotes regarding Samuel Johnson, all in the same hand. Some are on the verso of postal covers addressed to antiquary Richard Gough (1735-1809). Also of note are two watercolor paintings depicting Johnson at the Thrale home at Streatham Park, possibly done by Clarkson Stanfield as illustrations for an 1836 work by John Murray. Much of the remainder of the collection consists of letters which mention Johnson in passing, refer to his biographies, or quote his published works. Five items came from the papers of publisher John Nichols, and seven items relate to Charles Burney. One letter is addressed to Hester Thrale (later Hester Lynch Piozzi); she is also apparently depicted in the paintings.

William Bowyer papers, 1674-1874.
Correspondence and other papers relating to William Bowyer's (1699-1777) work as a printer in London. The bulk of the correspondence consists of incoming letters to Bowyer from the scholars Edward Clarke, William Clarke, and Jeremiah Markland, concerning printing, scholarly subjects, languanges including Greek and Hebrew, and family matters. Other correspondents include James Stanier Clarke, Catherine Markland, William Strode, Moses Williams, and William Wotten. Also includes two items written by Bowyer and a few letters addressed to Bowyer's apprentice and partner John Nichols. Letters prior to 1737 may have been addressed to the elder William Bowyer. Two letters in latin, signed "Ambrosius Bonvicus," were probably written by Ambrose Bonwicke as a student at St. John's College, Oxford. Other Papers include a manuscript address for a Mr. Stawell to give to the Duchess of York, an engraving of William Bowyer, an 1874 collection inventory by James Crossley, and proof sheets of an unidentified history of Bowyer's printing business.

Many of the letters are from authors whose work appeared in the popular and influential Gentleman's Magazine. Subjects include articles submitted for the magazine; letters to the editor and corrections of previous articles; business arrangements; and subscription and advertising negotiations. Many correspondents also discuss antiquarian and historical topics, including archaeological finds and numismatics, often in the context of proposing articles for Gentleman's Magazine or longer works for publication by Nichols & Co. Major correspondents include John Yonge Akerman, Thomas Blore, William Bray, Sir Egerton Brydges, Sir Henry Ellis, Maria Cantwell, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, Joseph Palmer, and Sir Charles George Young. There is also a small amount of personal and family correspondence among the printers themselves and with other members of the Nichols family.

Pinkerton, John, 1758-1826. John Pinkerton letters, 1775 Dec 14-1815 Jan 31.
Title:
John Pinkerton letters, 1775 Dec 14-1815 Jan 31.
Manuscript, in multiple hands, of several hundred letters written mostly to, by, and about John Pinkerton, primarily related to his professional life as a historian and poet. Many of the letters concern his or his correspondent's research in Scottish history and their reactions to recently published works on antiquarian topics in the history of the British Isles as well as publications about Scottish literature, especially poetry and ballads, or requests to borrow or obtain copies of books or requests for copies of manuscripts in libraries. Many concern Pinkerton's efforts to publish his own works as well as works of others, including letters from Dodsley and John Nichols responding both positively and negatively to his requests to publish his Scottish ballads and other works, and provide insight into the world of publishing as well as literary societies and libraries in the 18th century. The correspondence contains references to the long relationship between France and Scotland and France as a continued resource for important manuscripts in resolving questions of early Scottish history. In a 23 July 1786 letter to Pinkerton, Samuel Knight discusses his reaction upon reading Horace Walpole's play Mysterious Mother; other letters discussing morality plays refer to a Walpole letter of October 18, 1786; a letter dated 25 August 1792 from Mary Berry expressing a desire that Pinkerton visit Lord Orford at Strawberry Hill. Other letters of note: an inventory of portrait paintings at Taymouth Castle (Scotland); a letter from Charles Vallancy which endeavors to interpret the names of ancient Pictish kings; another which narrates Vallancy's fruitless search for the Psalter of Cashell in the Trinity College library and Gailic duain. Many letters address Pinkerton's interest in geology and geography, including one about "Scots fossils" and others about mountains in South America. Numerous other letters acknowledge Pinkerton's gifts of his own works to them, including one from the Literary and Antiquarian Society of Perth upon receiving a donation of his own History of Scotland. The four volumes are accompanied by two indexes, originally from vol. 4, one alphabetical and one chronological, though some of the letters indexed here have since been removed.

Autograph album, 1667-1823.
Manuscript, in multiple hands, with some annotations in a later hand, of several hundred signatures of members of Parliament and other persons in serving in government offices, pasted, tipped, and laid in. Many of the signatures appear at the bottom of bills, receipts, legal documents, and business letters; most of the entries preserve only fragments of the documents on which the signatures originally appeared. Many documents are receipts for orders of money for use for the Navy from the Treasurer of the Ordnance, or other orders regarding public monies. Although the volume includes signatures from the 17th century, most of the signatures are dated in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The collection includes the signatures of Robert Walpole; George Lyttelton; Francis Conyngham; George Grenville; Henry Edward Bunbury; Thomas Pelham; Henry Fox; Sidney Herbert; Horatio Walpole; Horace Walpole; and William Stanhope. The volume also includes several dozen examples of government seals, pasted in and labeled.

Nichols family papers, 1713-1874, [microform].
Correspondence, manuscripts, and documents relating to the printing firm of John Nichols and Son, covering a period from 1713, when the original firm of William Bowyer, the Elder (1663-1737), was burned, until the death of John Gough Nichols in 1873. The correspondence concerns primarily the social and domestic affairs of John Nichols (1745-1826) and of his family from 1766 to 1812. Scattered letters from business associates and minor authors are included, among them a group of letters from John Pridden (1758-1825), author and antiquary. The correspondence of John Bowyer Nichols (1779-1863) concerns the Nichols firm from 1799 to 1855. There are also several letters of, and relating to, William Bowyer (1699-1777), the senior partner of John Nichols. The collection also contains a volume of letters of condolence written at the time of John Nichols' death. The manuscripts in the collection consist primarily of the poetry of John Nichols, much of which was published in newspapers of the late 18th century. The manuscripts of John Bowyer Nichols concern his father and family. There are also contracts, bills, receipts, accounts, pamphlets, broadsides, engravings, and a group of 277 portraits.
