Title: Orations delivered by Mr. David Millar's scholars at Kirkcaldy, ca. 1749-1750.

Written in twelve separate scholar's hands. The final leaf reads, "To Mr Burcan. Schoolmr in Levin" and on the verso "Sir. I send you a copy of our intended Speeches at the Vaccance. Mr H. forgot to tell me, till within a few days, that you wanted to see part of them. They were transcrib'd by several boyes, & but sorrily done & so you'd have some difficulty to read them..." It was customary at the 'Vaccance' for the scholars to declaim 'Orationes' at the Burgh School. The 'Speeches' are composed by David Millar's scholars in what Simpson Ross describes as the tradition of the French rhetorician Charles Rollin, whose approach to teaching literature can be linked to the way in which Adam Smith was educated under David Millar. The 'Orations' describe the importance of a "proper education of children" being "the foundation of all our national improvement in peace and war, in trade & manufacture, the spring of all our public advantages & valuable blessings on which the power, prosperity & Glory of ye kingdom depends." There follows a detailed description of the syllabus including reading, writing, arithmetic, and religious instruction.
