Cutler, Temple, 1782-1857. Journey from Hamilton to the state of Ohio April 4th 1825. [Journal].

Title: Journey from Hamilton to the state of Ohio April 4th 1825. [Journal]. 1825 April 4-June 14.

Beginning April 4, 1825, Temple Cutler travels from Hamilton (Mass.) to Boston by stagecoach. He traveled from Boston to New York City on the steamship Connecticut and then to [New] Brunswick, NJ by the steamship Legislature. After a "dusty passage" via stagecoach through Princeton (NJ), Trenton (NJ) and Bristol (Penn.) to Philadelphia, Mr. Cutler took the steamship Congress to Newcastle (Del.), a stage to Frenchtown (MD) followed by the steamship United States to Baltimore (MD). The journey continued by stagecoach via the Great National Road through Hagarstown (MD), Cumberland (MD), and Uniontown (Penn.) to Wheeling (WV) where he boarded the steamship Herald to Marietta (OH). In Marietta, Temple borrowed a horse to ride to his Brother's house in Warren, arriving on April 14th, 1825. Temple makes several trips back and forth between Warren and Marietta on business for the Ohio Land Company and recounts the settlement of Marrietta, Amesville and Berne, Ohio. He visits several settlers (many are from New England) and local socalities including Nahum Ward, who "brought a colony of Scotch into this state." During one of his visits to Marietta, Temple describes the arrival of General Lafayette. Record includes a summary of the journal and notes on Marasseh Cutler (Temple's father) by the donor.
