Chiefly business and legal papers of an Ipswich, Mass., family, including account book and receipts (1721-30) for outfitting of ships and account book (1730-57) of expenses, of John Dennis (d.1757), papers relating to the guardianship of the William Searles children, estate papers of Margaret Rogers, and other receipts, accounts and town militia commissions, muster rolls, tax lists, and estate papers. Persons represented include John Dennis' father, Thomas Dennis (d.1706), and children, Thomas (1706-1771) and Rev. John Dennis (1708-1773). Other subject matter includes the First Parish Church in Ipswich, and the ships Charming Betty, Elizabeth, Grand Turk, John and Hannah, Mary, Prudent, and Ranger. Other persons represented include Jonathan Belcher, William Dummer, Rev. John and Nathaniel Rogers, William Shirley, and the Rogers family.

Transcripts of the letterbooks of Mass. Gov. Thomas Hutchinson, vols. 25-27, compiled by Malcolm Freiberg. Letters concern relations of the American colonies with Great Britain, particularly the activities of the Sons of Liberty and others in Boston and Massachusetts who opposed British government. Topics discussed include the reaction to the Stamp Act, the Boston Massacre, and the Non-importation agreements. Also, discussion of the tea trade and Hutchinson family matters. Correspondents include Sir Francis Bernard, William Bollan, David Chesebrough, the Earl of Hillsborough, Thomas Gage, Richard Jackson, Sir William Johnson, Benjamin Lynde Jr., Andrew Oliver, John Pownall, Nathaniel Rogers, Gov. William Tryon, and Israel Williams.

Ipswich (Mass.). Records, 1653-1835.

Title: Records, 1653-1835.

This collection papers includes a folder of local records, a volume of church records of the First Church of Christ, and a volume of sermon notes. The folder contains items covering the period 1656 to 1835, and includes deeds, correspondence, and papers concerning the jail, the grammar school, etc. The sermon notes are dated from 1653 to 1663. They were probably recorded by Rev. Nathaniel Rogers (1598-1655) and another member of his family, possibly his son Nathaniel (1632-1680). The volume of church records, from 1692 to 1743, includes notes on church meetings recorded by Rev. John Rogers (1666-1745), including the controversy over the resignation of Rev. Jabez Fitch (1672-1746), who resigned in 1723 in order to take a position at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, against the wishes of the Ipswich congregation. Rev. Nathaniel Rogers (1702-1775), son of John Rogers, replaced Fitch in 1726. Also included in the church records are notes on women expelled from the church for fornication, a list of proposals for church administration, etc. There is also a commentary on a Latin treatise by the Spanish Jesuit, Francisco Suarez (1548-1617), entitled "Disputationes Metaphysicas...."
