The collection is made up of two sections, correspondence and essays (both arranged alphabetically by author). The bulk of the collection is by George H. Dole, with almost half of his correspondence to his wife Clara Rowell Dole and several letters to his children. Thirty-one of the forty-five school essays were written by George H. Dole. Many of the items, both correspondence and essays, include the use of the Hawaiian language. George and Clara sign some of their letters with their Hawaiian names (George as Heoki and Clara as Kaalala). Correspondence: The 218 pieces of correspondence deal mainly with family events and daily activities, including churchgoing and visits with friends. The Hawaiian correspondence gives physical descriptions of Hawaii, commentaries on the Hawaiian government and details regarding the workings of sugar plantations. Some of the letters of George, Daniel and Charlotte describe their trips to America, giving an interesting look at travel in the 1870s. Daniel and Charlotte, while in America, visited Utah and met with Brigham Young. Two letters record their conversation with Young, in which they discussed polygamy and other church beliefs; the letters also give a description of the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. Thirty-nine of the 102 pieces of George's correspondence are typewritten letters from Riverside, California. The California correspondence deals with the Doles' visits to northern California and the birth of one of their grandchildren. The letters also give some descriptions of Riverside in the1890s. The letter from George H. Dole to William E. Rowell is an invitation to invest money in the Minnehaha Oil Company in Bakersfield, California (enclosed with the letter is a summary sheet for the proposed oil company). Essays: The essays were written by several of the children who attended Daniel Dole's schools in Punahou and Koloa. The essays are about various subjects, a few regarding Hawaii's government and history. The essay entitled "The Last War of Kauai" discusses the events following the death of King Kamehameha II. The essay entitled "Dear Sir" is an explanation of Hawaii's government, and the unknown author gives some opinions regarding politicians of the time. The four newsletters were also written by students. Sanford B. (Sanford Ballard) Dole was the editor, and probably author, of The Koloa Evening Transcript.

The papers reflect Bowring's service in London and on the Continent as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary for the Kingdom of Hawaii, 1859-1871, negotiating treaties to safeguard the independence of Hawaii. Predominantly they consist of correspondence with Robert Crichton Wyllie (1798-1865), Foreign Minister of the Kingdom, who also sent copies of many documents, published and unpublished, bearing on diplomatic problems and Hawaiian affairs. Other correspondence is with Manley Hopkins, the Hawaiian consul general in London; with Charles de Varigny and Charles C. Harris, Wyllie's successors; and with various European governments. Includes letter from Bowring to Edward Walford, Hamburg [vor der Höhe, Prussia], 1862 September 5 (1 l., A.L.S.).

Two letters written by Robert Crichton Wyllie from Honolulu and Oahu, Hawaii. In the first, written to Don Antonio Osio (December 21, 1849) in Spanish, Wyllie writes that he has remembered Osio to "the King in his council" (Kamehameka III). He writes that there are those in California who would like to do in Hawaii what "other adventurers have done in Texas," but that foreign governments would not allow the Hawaiian monarchy to be disturbed. The second letter was written to the lawyer John Ricord (December 1, 1854) and includes references to ships' losses in South America and Wyllie's efforts to stop the "depopulation" of native Hawaiians. He writes exensively of a recent event in which he was threatened by "Fillibusters from California" (former gold prospectors led by Samuel Brannan) who wanted Hawaii annexed into the United States, and his supposed raising of a small navy to prevent any attempted takeover. A carbon copy is included with each letter. An English translation is included with the letter to Osio.

Logbook of the Confederate States of America cruiser Shenandoah, Capt. James I. Waddell, commanding. the log was kept by Capt. Irvine S. Bulloch, Acting Master. Contains a list of officers on board and notes of the ships captured, the value of their cargoes, and the disposition of the prize (some were ransomed and others were burned). At the beginning of the period covered by the log, the ship set sail in the general direction of Australia and arrived at Melbourne, Jan. 25, 1865. After it left Australia and headed northward toward Hawaii, it attacked many whaling vessels. Included in the collection is a printed circular by R. C. Wyllie, with four manuscript endorsements relative to claims of Hackfeld & Company, 1865 Aug 12-Dec. 2, against the Confederate steamer Shenandoah for burning the Hawaiian bark Harvest.
