The papers also relate to Carrington's law practice with Robert Ould from 1865 to 1881 and contain the autograph collection of his son, Seddon Carrington, and his daughter, Mary Coles Carrington.

Nearly one-half of the collection relates to Smith's mercantile firm in Gloucester, the grain trade throughout the Chesapeake area, grain and land speculation, commodity prices, economic conditions, and foreign trade. Other papers concern social life and customs in Tidewater Virginia, slavery, religion, agriculture, education, U.S. territorial expansion, secession, life in the Confederacy, Reconstruction in Virginia, and family matters. Correspondents include William Jennings Bryan, Winfield Scott, Marion Seddon Smith, John Tyler, and Woodrow Wilson.
