Title: Guide to the People's Educational Camp Society and Camp Tamiment Photographs, 1920s-1960s

Camp Tamiment, a summer resort for socialists and their families, in near Bushkill, Pennsylvania, opened in 1921. Its purpose was to serve as a summer retreat for faculty, students, and friends of the Rand School of Social Science (a school for workers in New York City that was closely allied with the Socialist Party) and to provide a reliable source of revenue for the School. The Camp was also home to the Tamiment Playhouse, which became a major creative outlet for theater, dance, film, and television in the United States, nurturing major entertainment figures such as Danny Kaye. The Camp was a financial success from its outset, and had served as a major source of support for the Rand School for more than twenty years, when the Internal Revenue Service revoked the Camp's tax-exempt status in 1963. This action contributed directly to the Camp's demise; it closed in 1965 and was sold to commercial interests. The collection documents Camp buildings, facilities, and layout, and includes numerous portraits of Camp management, staff, and prominent guests. A significant number of the photographs are black and white postcards shot by two photographers Lewis "Snappy" Goren and Seymour Fischer for Camp guests and for the Camp itself.

The Tamiment Playhouse was a summer theater at Camp Tamiment which from 1921-1965 was an educational and recreational summer resort (originally) for socialists near Bushkill, Pa. The TPH became a preeminent workshop for theater, dance, film, and television and included actors such as: Danny Kaye, Bea Arthur, Imogene Coca, and Carol Burnett; directors: Max Liebman, Herb Ross, and Joe Layton; choreographer: Jerome Robbins; and writers: Woody Allen and Neil Simon. The collection includes: scores, scripts, clippings, correspondence, ephemera, and casefiles for interviews with TPH alumni.

About two-thirds of the images in this collection are of Tamiment Playhouse productions or production-related activities, including from Your Show of Shows, and The Princess and the Pea, which later became the successful musical Once Upon a Mattress. The remainder of the images consist of a series of pages of photographs from scrapbooks. These photographs focus on Camp Tamiment -- its facilities, staff, and campers, from the 1920s through 1941 -- rather than the Playhouse. Many photographs were also produced as postcards by photographers Lewis "Snappy" Goren and Seymour Fischer. The collection includes images of actors such as Danny Kaye, Bea Arthur, Imogene Coca, Dick Shawn, and Carol Burnett; directors such as Max L. Liebman and Joe Layton; choreographers and dancers like Jerome Robbins, and Anita Alvarez; and writers Woody Allen and Neil Simon. There are also images of Ben Josephson and Bertha Mailly, respectively director and founder of Camp Tamiment.
