Report of the expedition to the river Colorado made in the U.S. Schooner "Invincible", Capt. A.H. Wilcox, from November [1850] to March 1851 : by order of Maj. Genl. P.F. Smith, comdg. Pacific Division, 1851 Mar. 31.
A copy of the original manuscript report, in the author's own hand, of Lt. George H. Derby's exploration of the lower Colorado River, done from November 1850 to March 1851. The expedition was prompted by the United States' acquisition of the area at the conclusion of the Mexican War. The text is substantially the same as in the printed version of the report, published in 1852 as Senate Executive Document no. 81, though there are a few minor changes. Manuscript includes thirteen illustrations, only four of which appeared in the published version. Includes Derby's map of the mouth of the Colorado River.

Dolley, Frank S. Collection of Frank S. Dolley, 1862-1957.
Title:
Collection of Frank S. Dolley, 1862-1957.
This collection consists of research materials collected by Dr. Frank Dolley for his study of the lower Colorado River, especially related to steam navigation. Included are two manuscripts written by Dr. Dolley. The first is a history of navigation on the lower Colorado River that includes a brief discussion of Spanish explorations of the Delta region but emphasizes the region's nineteenth-century history, with particular attention paid to steamboat design and pilots. Included in this manuscript are discussions of the Chemehuevi, Cocopah, and Yuma Indians, the Colorado Steam Navigation Company, Captains George H. Derby and William H. Hardy, J.C. Ives, and A. H. Wilcox. The second manuscript is an edited version of Ellen M. Robinson's letters, most between Ellen at Port Isabel on the Colorado Delta and her family in Maryland. These letters depict the experiences of a young woman moving across the country in 1869 with David Robinson, a husband she barely knew, as she tried to narrate the journey and describe her new home to her family. Among the notable experiences she relayed in her letters was a visit to the unfinished Tabernacle in Salt Lake City, a parade in San Francisco featuring General William T. Sherman, and a visit to Woodward's Gardens while staying in that city. The correspondence section includes Ellen Robinson's letters from the 1870s and Frank Dolley's correspondence with Ellen's daughter Margaret Robinson in the 1950s. Also included in the collection are copies of Ellen Robinson's letters, made by Dr. Dolley, photographs, and other ephemera. Three of Dr. Dolley's research notebooks are included, covering numerous subjects related to the lower Colorado River region and the Colorado Delta, with particular focus on the river's steamboat activity. These notebooks have been divided for preservation and ease of use, but remain in the order in which they were found, which is loosely alphabetical by subject. There is repetition from one notebook to the other, though each also includes unique material. Most of these notes represent Dr. Dolley's research in published sources, including periodicals, narrative accounts, and regional histories, but also includes correspondence with Percy Carter Linss, a descendent of Colorado River ferry operator and landowner Hall Hanlon.

Letters to John James Abert [facsimiles], 1850-1859.
Set of facsimile letters written from George Horatio Derby to Colonel J.J. Abert, mainly regarding work on the San Diego River levee. Derby writes of his activities at Monterey, his appointment to San Diego, his various expenses, his "long and tedious passage" from New York to San Diego, the results of his levee building survey for the San Diego River, the difficulties of acquiring funding for the project, his troubles trying to carry equipment on horseback, the completion of work on the San Diego River, Abert's unhappiness with modifications made by Derby to original levee plans ("I believe I am the only officer on this coast whose official drafts have ever been dishonored" writes Derby of the incident), his appointment as Aide-de-Camp of General Wool, and his work in the Cascades (Washington state). Derby also writes of being delayed on his travels by the birth of his child aboard a ship and his request to "improve in my profession...by examining the fortifications of Europe" with the hope of achieving the rank of Captain. Also includes a letter to Secretary of War Jefferson Davis in which Derby asks to be sent east to be near his ailing mother, a list of equipment lost in the Punta River, and various plans and estimates relating to the San Diego River.

Ellis, Arthur M. (Arthur McDonald), 1875-1932,. Arthur M. Ellis Photographic Negative Collection [graphic], 1849-1923, (bulk 1880s-1890s)
Title:
Arthur M. Ellis Photographic Negative Collection [graphic], 1849-1923, (bulk 1880s-1890s)
The collection consists of photographic prints and 4 x 5 inch and smaller glass negatives, glass positives, film negatives and lantern slides depicting Southern California (mainly Los Angeles and nearby communities). The collection provides quite a comprehensive picture of the growth and development of Los Angeles at the turn of the twentieth century. The smaller format items are mostly copy negatives (not originals) taken by Ellis of images in other collections. Ellis copied the photographic holdings of, among others, Bancroft, Behrendt, Tyler, Hill, Ingersoll, Forman, Rowan, Foxley, Guinn, Fryer, A.W. Francisco, McPherson, Charles Prudhomme and William Burton. The collection is particularly strong in images of Central Los Angeles from the 1880s to the 1910s and Los Angeles County beach communities in the 1900s and 1910s. Also of note are images of sites and themes of historic or cultural significance, and portraits. In addition to images of central Los Angeles, the collection includes images of Los Angeles County beach communities, Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley, and Orange, Ventura, San Bernardino and San Diego Counties. The historic and cultural sites include photographs of missions and churches; commercial, municipal and residential buildings, including historic adobes; schools and parks; railroads, emigration, and stagecoach routes; Campo de Cahuenga; Busch Gardens in Pasadena; the Modjeska home in Santa Ana; the Lake Vineyard, Sunnyslope, and the Rowland properties in the San Gabriel Valley; and images of Native Americans and Native American culture. Portraits include those of California pioneers, prominent Angelinos and San Diegans, including J. Lancaster Brent, George Horatio Derby, Hillard Dorsey, the Ellis Family, Judge A.J. King and family, Vicente Lugo, Charles Prudhomme, Truman H. Rose, William Rubottom, Abel Stearns, 1st Worshipful Master of the California Masonic Lodge Levi Stowall, and the Workman family. Some of the 4 x 5 inch and smaller glass negatives and lantern slides depict historic sites of Northern California, including mining camps of the California Gold Rush. There are also miscellaneous images pertaining to themes with no direct relationship to California or the American West, such as Freemasonry and general United States history. The United States history images include copies of Abraham Lincoln portraits and the Lincoln home in Kentucky as well as early American figures including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.
