Family and political correspondence, mainly of the 1850s, with material on Mormon history, including the "Mormon War," and on frontier and pioneer life. Includes journals, scrapbooks, letter books, and proceedings pertaining to councils and negotiations with the Blackfoot Indians and other tribes (1855). Letters of Cumming's wife, Elizabeth Wells Randall Cumming, describe incidents on her trip to Utah with her husband when he was named governor with details of frontier conditions and Indian troubles. Cumming's official letter books contain correspondence to James Buchanan, Lewis Cass, Howell Cobb, John B. Floyd, Albert S. Johnston, Brigham Young, and others. Additional correspondents include W.W. Bibb, J.S. Black, William Medill, B.F. Perry, Franklin Pierce, Alexander H. Stephens, and G.M. Troup. Includes papers of William Clay Cumming, a brother, pertaining to his studies at Princeton University (1805) and at the Litchfield Law School; his accounts of opposition to Federalism in New England; his experiences in the War of 1812; travels in the Mississippi Valley and the South; and a few comments on Brazil and Uruguay (1816). The collection also contains the papers of Thomas Cumming.

Cumming, Kate, 1835-1909. Papers, 1795-1909.

Title: Papers, 1795-1909.

The bulk of this collection is composed of handwritten manuscripts of Kate Cummmings work, including "Gleanings from Southland," The Bostonians," and "Rose of Elgin." Some of her essays included in this collection include "Moral Training in Public Schools," "Tale of the South," and "Sir Walter Scott." The collection also includes correspondence dating from 1795 to 1908 concerning subjects such as shipping, family genealogy, family matters, the Civil War, and Reconstruction matters. Of particular interest are letters from Mary Randolph Custis Lee, discussing her views of the Southern cause and atrocities committed during the war. Mrs. Lee's letters also discuss the struggle of finding a photograph of her husband, General Robert E. Lee and his health. There is also one letter from Jefferson Davis thanking Kate for her book. Additional correspondents include General Steven D. Lee, Silas McBee, Dr. L. H. Stout (former surgeon for the Hospital of the Army of Tennessee), and General Marcus Wright. There are also a few letters written to Kate from family members living in Australia. The collection also contains Cumming family financial records and some Confederate material and ephemera. The collection also has diaries of Kate, her family and others, dating from 1844-1900. These tend to be rather sketchy in the information provided in them. There is also an arithmetic book (1813) which belonged to Kate's father, David.

Compilation, 1666-1893 (bulk 1700-1800) of a number of miscellaneous manuscript collections relating to the early history of Ulster County (N.Y.). It consists mainly of land conveyances and material related to boundary disputes, but there are also other legal documents, maps, military papers, financial papers, and some correspondence. Some court documents include an appeal from Thomas Cumming to the court in Kingston, dated 1779, against a conviction of treason, and an indictment against an unmarried woman for the murder of her child. The collection includes material related to James Alexander, Sir Edmund Andros, Cadwallader Colden, Abraham De Peyster, John De Peyster, Peter Schuyler, William Smith, as well as material related to other members of these families and to the Harrison, Provoost, Beekman, and Van Cortlandt families.
