These memoirs describe his experiences and memories at his family homes in Pendleton, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia as well as visiting his uncle, William Henry Stiles' plantation in Bartow County, Georgia from 1854 to 1863 and 1865 to 1870. Also included is a family tree with members of the MacKay, Elliott, McQueen, Williamson, Bourke, and Cowper families.

This collection includes a land grant to Peter Sliterman for a town lot in Derby Ward in Savannah, Georgia, land grant to William Bell for a town lot in Reynold Ward in Savannah, land grant and seal to Samuel Stiles for 500 acres of land in St. Philip's Parish outside of Savannah, ledger belonging to Joseph Stiles, photostat reproduction of the presidential appointment of William H. Stiles as the Charge d'Affairs to the Austrian Court and travel diary written during his appointment, and marriage indenture between William H. Stiles Jr. and Eliza Clifford Gordon. The papers date from 1758 to 1857.

Topics include activities at the Savannah Poor House and Hospital, the care and treatment of a mental patient, work of the United States Army Corps of Engineers on the Savannah River, the Second Seminole War, plantation life, trips to the Virginia springs, the education of women, and the impact of the Civil War. Volumes are chiefly merchantile and plantation records. There is also microfilm containing a brief Civil War diary of Robert Mackay Stiles (1836-1865) and genealogical information on the related Couper and Maxwell families.

This collection contains an indenture dated March 5, 1851, by which Alexander A. Smets, Robert Lachlison, James Lachlison, and Amos Scudder secured a loan from Benjamin E. Stiles (1794-1855) and William H. Stiles (1809-1865). Benjamin and William Stiles were the executors of the estate of Joseph Stiles (1758-1838) and the property used to secure the loan was located in the Yamacraw area of Savannah, Georgia.
