Title: King and Wilder families papers, 1817-1946.

This collection contains family correspondence, photographs, printed materials, and clippings of Thomas Butler King and his family, especially of his daughter, Georgia Page King, who married Joseph John Wilder. Very few of Thomas Butler King's letters and papers relate to his political career; most of them concern family affairs. The letters of Thomas Butler King, Jr. are mostly from California where he was with his father in the 1850s. Henry Lord Page King's letters pertain largely to the Civil War - letters from various stations and battlefields and some official papers. There is also a typed copy of his diary, 1862. John Floyd King's and Mallery Page King's papers are mostly letters to other members of their family. There is only one letter and a photograph of Richard Cuyler King, in the collection. The collection also contains a few papers of Gen. William Duncan Smith: letters to his wife and official papers. While there are very few papers of Henry Rootes Jackson in this collection, his wife, Georgia Page King Wilder and her sister, Florence Barclay King Jackson kept up an extensive correspondence which tells something of him and their life together. Also included are letters to Joseph John Wilder from his parents while he was attending school in Germany, giving news of life at home during the Civil War. There is biographical information on many members of the King and Wilder families with the collection. In addition to family correspondence, there are photographs, printed materials and clippings in the collection.

Brumby and Smith family papers, 1833-1929.

The collection includes miscellaneous items of Laura Margaret Cole (Mrs. James R.) Smith (b. 1806) of South Carolina; her daughter, Laura Smith Brumby (fl. 1866- 1885); and her son-in-law, James R. Brumby (b. 1846). Included are a diary, 1833-1834, of Laura Margaret Cole Smith, with entries discussing courting, death and dying, and the nullification crisis of 1832, and her reminiscences, written as epsitolary fiction, recounting her childhood and daily life. Also included is a diary, 1884-1885, of Laura Brumby, describing a wagon trip from Thomasville, Ga., to Clearwater and Tampa, Fla.; and reminiscences, written in 1929, of James R. Brumby, a native of Holmes and Yazoo counties, Miss., Confederate soldier who served with the 7th Georgia Cavalry in the Army of Northern Virginia, and chair manufacturer of Marietta, Ga., in which he detailed family history, including his experiences during the Civil War and Brumby family activities in the furniture business.

Selections from scrapbooks compiled by Burroughs for his children, including letters, clippings, pictures, and other papers of and about the Burroughs family of Brunswick, Ga., and their Berrien, Hazelhurst, MacPherson, Johnston, and other relatives. Most items are of William Berrien Burroughs (1842-1917), including 19th-century family correspondence, letters he wrote while serving with the 7th Georgia Cavalry in the Civil War, and clippings of his historical articles. A copy of a letter, 1870, from Sidney Lanier, and of letters from Lanier's wife, Mary D. Lanier, are included.

This collection consists of pay vouchers, muster rolls, etc. from Georgia soldiers as well as soldiers from other states serving in Georgia. They were primarily kept by Captain N. B. Brown, Assistant Quartermaster, Acting Paymaster. They are arranged in numerical order as assigned by Brown.The bulk of this collection consists of pay vouchers. The remainder consists of muster, pay and bounty rolls, returns of ordnance, provisions and pay accounts, discharges, and descriptive lists. Several Georgia regiments are represented including infantry, artillery, cavalry, and independent companies. Also included are documents pertaining to Confederate units from other states. The military companies, batteries, and camps surrounding Savannah figure prominently.There are also non-financial documents in the collection. There is a hand written copy of the petition to Jefferson Davis by several commanding officers for the removal of General Braxton Bragg, October 4, 1863. These items are indexed by bundle and package numbers on the cards which correspond with the bundle and package numbers listed in this finding aid.The original WPA index of personal names has been transcribed and is available with the print finding aid in the Georgia Historical Society reading room. This index includes accurate item numbers. However, the box numbers listed in the print index are incorrect and require updating.

Scattered business papers of George Wayne Anderson and business and military papers of Edward Clifford Anderson Jr. Included are leases, accounts, wills, insurance policies, certificates of shares, receipts, bank statements, tax returns, memoranda, letters, indentures, and plats. Most of the papers deal with the activities of George Wayne Anderson as property owner; executor or administrator of various estates, including those of William Washington Gordon (1796-1842), William J. Scott, and John Waters; and president of Planters Bank of Savannah. Most extensive is the correspondence of Elizabeth Mackensie and the Manson family of England and Scotland concerning an estate that Anderson administered for them. Also included are nine letters of Edward Clifford Anderson (1815-1883), brother of George Wayne Anderson and mayor of Savannah, relating to local politics, and a few letters of other members of the Anderson family. Civil War papers include commissions, orders, and letters chiefly from Edward Clifford Anderson Jr. to his superiors concerning recruitment, organization, and consolidation of the Randolph Rangers, a regiment he raised. A record book tracks commissions, transfers, discharges, deaths, and desertions of officers and soldiers. After 1870, the papers are largely those of Edward Clifford Anderson Jr. Some of these papers concern an embezzlement of funds from the Planters Bank. Papers, 1892-1896, pertain to the Atlantic Short Line Railroad, the Macon and Atlantic Railway, and the Macon and Savannah Construction Company.
