Minor, University of Virginia, writes to William Thomas Leavell, Theological Seminary, Alexandria D.C. concerning the challenges and difficulties of his work as a tutor for the children of a University professor, possibly George Blaettermann. He mentions that two Episcopal Ministers are staying at the University, as well as several old school mates and acquaintances at the University. He makes a passing reference to his mother's not liking the dissipation of the place but that Williamsburg is thrice as bad.

G.W. Gooch describing the "unrivalled dissipation" of the Christmas holidays at the University; and a letter, 1841, George B. Conway to Reubin T. Thornton regarding his studies at the University of Virginia and hunting in Caroline Co., Va. Also included is a monthly attendance report, November 1854, of Abram B. Archer signed by Socrates Maupin. With these is a copy of a pamphlet produced in honor of the 100th anniversary of Pi Kappa Alpha.

Books borrowed by Poe include Rollins's History (p. 60 and 67), Robertson's America (p. 68), Marshall's Washington (p. 71), Voltaire (p. 73), and Dufief's Nature didplayed (p. 77). The collection consists chiefly of correspondence between Ellen Coolidge and her mother Martha Jefferson Randolph, and sisters Virginia Trist, Cornelia Randolph and Mary Randolph. They discuss family and friends; trips to Richmond, Philadelphia and Baltimore; life in Boston, and at Monticello and Poplar Forest; the University of Virginia students, faculty and Board of Visitors; Thomas Jefferson's illness and death, debts, the proposed lottery, and the sale of Monticello and his slaves. Also Martha Randolph's life in Washington and continuing financial problems; the careers of Joseph Coolidge in the China trade, Nicholas Trist in the diplomatic service, Benjamin Franklin Randolph in medicine and George Wythe Randolph in the navy; and the publication of "Memoirs, correspondence and private papers of Thomas Jefferson. Blatterman recalls life in London, mentioning visits of Washington Irving (for whom Charlotte Elizabeth Blaettermann wrote out the printer's copy of the Sketch Book), Richard Rush, George Ticknor, and John Randolph. After the family's arrival at the University of Virginia, he mentions visits with Jefferson, the Madisons, Monroe, Lafayette, Edgar Allan Poe, and many local families. Incidents recorded include the death of George Blaettermann and defrauding of his family by a German preacher. A special section records his recollections of Thomas Jefferson including his foreign language instruction by George Blaettermann. A lengthy section deals with Captain Uriah P. Levy, a subsequent owner of Monticello, his family, particularly his son Thomas Jefferson Levy, and local attitudes toward them. With the memoirs are photocopies of family daguerreotypes and a diploma awarded to Blaettermann.

Blaettermann answers six charges [made by the Chairman of the Faculty?]. He states that he does reside in his Pavilion and has only resided elsewhere when sick; he has no duties in the "French School" nor with Latin instruction; he taught modern history and geography, but his lectures are now "omitted because no students will attend them;" he denies negligence in his lectures; he states that he has submitted reports as required but was unaware he was required to do so at the end of each week; finally, he states that he has allowed two students to reside in his Pavilion.

Garnett, University of Virginia, writes about life at the University particularly a student fracas that involved "drinking themselves into courage, dragging tins up and down the arcades, breaking down the Rotunda door with an axe, ringing the bell, shooting pistols off the top of the Rotunda, and breaking the windows." He briefly mentions hearing a sermon by Bishop Meade, comments on poor teaching by Dr. B[laettermann] and asks to be remembered to all at home, including servants.

In letters, 1838 December 1,1839 January 1 and 1839 April 2, H[enr]y Stokes writes to his father Colin, describing his trip to Charlottesville from Lunenburg and itemizing his travel expenses, describing lectures by Gessner Harrison on classics, Charles Bonnycastle on algebra, George Blaettermann on French and Italian, and commenting that the students are well behaved and he doesn't think "there are many more wild ones amongst us to send off,"
