Banks, Joseph, 1743-1820. Sir Joseph Banks papers, 1763-1830 (inclusive).
Title:
Sir Joseph Banks papers, 1763-1830 (inclusive).
The papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes, and other papers documenting the personal life and professional career of Sir Joseph Banks, a British naturalist and explorer. Correspondence with stewards and landowners in Lincolnshire and elsewhere detail Banks' interest in agriculture and farming. Other papers relate to family estates, to Banks' scientific investigations and to his interest in the exploration of Africa and other regions. A translation of Frederic Horneman's "Travels into the interior of Africa performed for the African Society," (ca. 1800) and letters relating to the death of explorer Mungo Park are included.

Piozzi, Hester Lynch, 1741-1821,. Autograph letter signed from Hester Lynch Piozzi, Denbigh, to Mrs. Siddons, London [manuscript], 1794 August 27.
Title:
Autograph letter signed from Hester Lynch Piozzi, Denbigh, to Mrs. Siddons, London [manuscript], 1794 August 27.
Mrs. Piozzi mentions that "all goes well but me, and I am stunned in the Ears somehow, dizzy and as if deaf:----a whorson tingling as Sir John Falstaff says." With regards to the Mysteries of Udolpho, she says "some Lady was saying the other day that the Book was like Macbeth--as like replied H:L:P as Peppermint Water is to good French Brandy." Much of the letter consists of Mrs. Piozzi's parody of Newbery's "Chapter of Kings." Piozzi's verse about French revolutionaries entitled "Chapter of King-killers" begins "When France mad for Freedom her King control'd." This text of the poem includes several revisions.

Lawrence, Mrs. Commonplace book, circa 1808-1820.
Title:
Commonplace book, circa 1808-1820.
Manuscript, in various hands, of a collection of several hundred primarily sentimental and lighthearted poems, both copied by hand as well as printed and pasted in. The collection includes poetry by Robert Southey, Thomas Gray, William Wordsworth, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Robinson, William Roscoe, and Thomas Moore; and address such subjects as death of children; orphans; love; nature; and women's conduct. Most of the manuscript poems include the names of the people who copied them; an excerpt from George Byron's Don Juan is labeled, "Copied for me by George H. Lawrence," while a poem by Southey is annotated, "C W Lawrence." Many others have been signed by members of the D'Aguilan family. The collection also includes a number of printed anecdotes, letters, and news articles on such subjects as the trial of John Bellingham for the assassination of Prime Minister Spencer Perceval; a report of a fancy-dress ball given by the Hand-in-Hand Society in 1819; an advertisement for the sale of a horse skeleton at Bullock's Museum; and the will of Samuel Romilly. On p. 18, a news article dated 1808 about a masquerade mentions Mrs. Lawrence as a guest. The volume also contains a letter in a child's hand written to "dear Sophy," followed by numerous sketches of people.

Piozzi, Hester Lynch, 1741-1821,. Autograph letter signed from Hester Lynch Piozzi, Denbigh, to Mrs. Pennington, Bristol [manuscript], 1794 September 11.
Title:
Autograph letter signed from Hester Lynch Piozzi, Denbigh, to Mrs. Pennington, Bristol [manuscript], 1794 September 11.
Mrs. Piozzi comments on the increased position of terror in novels and declares that Ann Radcliffe "plays that game best." She adds, however, Radcliffe's "tricks used to fright Mrs. Siddons and me very much, but when somebody said her book was like Macbeth, 'Ay,' replied H:L:P, 'about as like as Peppermint Water is to good French Brandy.'" Much of the letter consists of Mrs. Piozzi's parody of Newbery's "Chapter of Kings." Piozzi's verse about French revolutionaries entitled "Chapter of King-killers" begins "When France mad for Freedom her King control'd."
