Chiefly business correspondence from Patteson's law practice. Subjects other than legal matters include Virginia politics, the University of Virginia, Buckingham and Cumberland Counties' politics, free silver, and the appointment of Thomas Henry Carter as proctor of the University of Virginia in 1897. Of interest are a letter from John W. Daniel commenting on the defeat of William J. Bryan for the presidency in 1896; Armistead C. Gordon's summation of Woodrow Wilson as a prospective president of the University of Virginia; an 1897 petition from the University of Virginia faculty to the Proctor, asking that the Building Committee consult with them over new construction; and an 1897 letter from Woodrow Wilson urging a promotion for U. Va. professory Richard H. Dabney. Includes writings, many fragmented, on Patteson's proposed legislation concerning trustees and fiduciaries and protection for individuals against trusts and corporations. Correspondents include Archer Anderson, Charles Minor Blackford, John Thompson Brown, Joseph Bryan, A. S. Buford, William Cabell, Richard H. Dabney, John W. Daniel, Henry D. Flood, Armistead C. Chiefly the papers of Rebecca (Yancey) Williams, including a manuscript of her book, The Vanishing Virginian (1940), a biographical story of her father, Lynchburg, Va., lawyer, Robert Davis Yancey (1855- 1931), and correspondence, 1939-1942, documenting the process of making a movie based on it, including an exchange of letters between Williams and producer Edwin Harris Knopf (1899-1987), as well as scripts, contracts, photographs, publicity releases, and an architectural drawing of Yancey's house in Lynchburg. There are also manuscripts for Carry Me Back (1942) and various essays on biographical or political and historical subjects. Williams' diaries, 1942 and 1944, record her activities during World War II, and correspondence and other materials reflect the activities of the Jamestowne Society during Williams' tenure as historian. Papers of Dr. John Bell Williams include correspondence, 1932- 1966, chiefly concerning the Medical College of Virginia and dentistry; essays, speeches, and notes, 1922-1968, including a speech on Margaret Nolting (1883-1966), first woman graduate of the Medical College of Virginia; and programs and speeches, 1948-1967, concerning commencement exercises at St. Luke's Hospital Training School for Nurses, Richmond.

Predominently correspondence, 1940-1942, written to Rebecca (Yancey) Williams concerning her book, The Vanishing Virginian (1940), a semi-biographical story about her father, Lynchburg, Va., lawyer Robert Davis Yancey (1855-1931). Correspondents include Spring Byington, Douglas Southall Freeman, Francis Pendleton Gaines, Meta Glass, Kathryn Grayson, and Margaret (Mitchell) Marsh. Also included are writings, including an unfinished work, "The Great Adventure: Jamestown, Virginia"; essays concerning William Byrd II, African Americans, and a train trip from Alexandria to Charlottesville, Va., and reviews of the works of other authors, chiefly of books on southern subjects; a speech on Thomas West, Lord De la Warr, governor of Virginia; and notes on the West family. Also included is the dairy, 1946 January 1 - June 20 (copy), of Virgil Carrington Jones, executive secretary to Virginia governor William Munford Tuck, a speech, 1948, by Tuck, and notes by Jones and Williams concerning Tuck.
