Doug Anderson papers, 1948?-1954
Title:
Doug Anderson papers 1948?-1954
Doug Anderson is an illustrator and author who specializes in subject matter pertaining to the theater. Born in Sutton, New Hampshire in 1919, Anderson worked for several years for the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts in Concord, N.H. After moving to New York he worked as a freelance artist, specializing in theater drawings and caricatures for newspapers in New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. Anderson's theater work has appeared in magazines such as THE NEW YORKER, THE NEW REPUBLIC, FORTUNE, THEATRE ARTS, READER'S DIGEST, and others. Anderson has also illustrated a number of books, including HOW TO DRAW WITH A LIGHT TOUCH, which he co-authored with Mary Anne Guitar. The Doug Anderson papers consist of drawings or reproductions of drawings by Anderson, two versions of a feature story concerning actress Margaret Rutherford written and illustrated by Anderson, and some correspondence concerning Anderson's work from Rutherford and Estelle Winwood. Margaret Rutherford's note concerns Anderson's article about her, written for Theatre Arts magazine in 1954. Included is Anderson's typescript draft of the article sent to the actress for her comments, her response, and the published version of the article. There are three Anderson drawings of Martita Hunt in the title role of THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT (1948 Broadway premiere), one of which is inscribed, dated, and signed by her, as well as an inscribed drawing of Estelle Winwood in a supporting role in the same production, accompanied by her brief note of thanks. There are also four pages photocopied from Anderson's book HOW TO DRAW WITH THE LIGHT TOUCH.

Lucille Lortel papers
Title:
Lucille Lortel papers
The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files.

In a letter to Louise Collier Willcox, Cabell writes that he has inscribed a copy of "The High Place" for her, will read her translation of "My friend from Limousin," and comments that the use of the word "loan" as a verb dates back to Shakespeare's Henry VIII.

Harold Clurman papers, 1938-1978
Title:
Harold Clurman papers 1938-1978
The Harold Clurman papers contain notebooks and journals, director's annotated scripts, manuscript drafts and annotated typescripts of Clurman's books, and photograph scrapbooks documenting his career as a director, critic and writer. The materials span from 1935 through 1978 and give an interesting look at Clurman's work and thought process as a director. Notebooks contain his ideas on plot and character development, as well as casting notes and ideas for plays which he directed, while the scripts contain his director's annotations and compliment the notebooks for research and study of Clurman's techniques as a director. Drafts and typescripts of Mr. Clurman's three books: On Directing; All People Are Famous; and Ibsen show these works as they evolved. Finally, the photograph scrapbooks give a pictorial representation of specific plays including AWAKE AND SING and foreign productions of THE ICEMAN COMETH and LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT.
