Tamiment Library. Tamiment Library manuscript files collection relating to individuals and organizations associated with radicalism, the labor movement, and progressive social action in the United States, 1950-2001 (bulk 1910-1965).
Title:
Tamiment Library manuscript files collection relating to individuals and organizations associated with radicalism, the labor movement, and progressive social action in the United States, 1950-2001 (bulk 1910-1965).
This collection contains (through 2003) almost 400 files (some containing more than one folder), most pertaining to individuals, the remainder to organizations, events and topics. While most of the individuals were active in the United States, there are also files for a number of prominent European figures. Future additions to this collection, i.e., manuscript files received from 2004 onward, will be placed in an addendum, and this guide will be periodically updated to reflect these additions.

Marino, Samuel J. Samuel J. Marino Collection.
Title:
Samuel J. Marino Collection.
The cornerstone of the Samuel J. Marino Collection is printing and publishing, with particular attention to newspaper and periodicals. No opportunity was ever missed to add to the history of a printer or publisher, or a newspaper or periodical, with no limit as to country or language, though the major holdings are of the United States, England, and France. The collection contains special editions, limited editions, autographed copied, small presses and publications of book clubs. It includes a substantial amount of first issues, special and commemorative issues of newspapers and periodicals. The music collections in the Marino Collection are a result of military service in Naples, Italy (1943-1946). It began, initially, with the acquisition of opera piano-vocal scores, vocal solos, religious choral works, hymnody and opera libretti. Giacomo Puccini, opera composer, became the focus in music. As a result, the holdings on Puccini span piano-vocal scores, libretti, biographies, bibliographies, criticism, and books and plays from which Puccini and his librettists adapted a short story, sections of a longer work or a play to the specific demands of opera. The successful Broadway Rock musical, "Rent," inspired by Puccini's "La Boheme," is represented with a copy of an instrument-vocal score and a number of ephemera. Pinocchio, the puppet, has challenged book illustrators and motion picture artists. One will find in the Marino Collection a goodly number of dissimilar and novel artistic renderings of the naughty puppet, including several video versions. On a visit to Bath, England, a facsimile copy of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, in a superlative Bayntun and Riviere binding, was acquired. This was sent to McNeese in honor of Dr. W. N. Cusic, who, as President of McNeese State College, during difficult and changing times, had steered the course of the institution in a wise and courageous manner.

Llewellyn, Richard. Papers, 1939-1952 (bulk 1949-1952).
Title:
Papers, 1939-1952 (bulk 1949-1952).
The Llewellyn papers comprise manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, slides, negatives, personal effects, financial papers, clippings, and other printed materials. Llewellyn's career as a novelist and screenwriter in the United States just after World War II is well documented in this collection, which includes the manuscripts for four novels, including an unpublished one, as well as short stories, articles, and scripts for stage, screen, and television. The novel for which Llewellyn is best known, How Green Was My Valley, is not represented in the collection. Also present is correspondence, highlighted by letters from his father, William Llewellyn Lloyd, and his first wife, Nona Sonstenby. Other correspondents of note include Earle J. Bernheimer, the French spy Mathilde Carre, Curtis Brown Ltd., Loraine Fielding, Edith Haggard, Galston Hardy, Naomi Jacob, and Michael Joseph Ltd. A collection of photographs documents Llewellyn's travels from 1949-1951, and a series of personal papers includes his birth certificate, military records, and financial papers. A sketch by Florencio Molina Jacobs and a carbon typescript of a novel by Ignazio Silone are also present.

Guide to the Max Shachtman Papers, 1917-1969
Title:
Guide to the Max Shachtman Papers, 1917-1969
Max Shachtman was an author, editor, and a leader (successively) in the communist, Trotskyist, and socialist movements whose views helped shape the outlook of many progressive and liberal anti-communist intellectuals and labor leaders. Shachtman was a Polish-Jewish immigrant interested in socialist reform and the communist movement, but in 1928, was expelled from the Communist Party after adopting Trotsky's views. In 1929 he became a leader of the Communist League of America and lead a splinter group, the Workers Party (later the Independent Socialist League) who had differences with the party establishment's uncritical view of the Hitler-Stalin Pact of 1939. During the 1950s, Shachtman developed the political strategy known as 'realignment,' which held that U.S. socialists should ally themselves with the leadership of the labor movement and together work to make the Democratic Party into a social democratic party. During the 1960s, Shachtman began a history of the Communist International, which remained unfinished at his death in 1972. The papers include international organizational bulletins, correspondence, notes, clippings, cartoons, lithographs and manuscripts, documenting both his political and literary activities. Also included are research notes for his history of the Communist International, personal correspondence, an unpublished manuscript of Alfred Rosmer's memoirs of John Reed and a collection of German leaflets tracing the debate between the Nazis, the Communist Party, the Social Democrats and the German Trotskyists. Prominent correspondents include Norman Thomas, Natalia Sedova Trotsky, Erich Fromm, A.J. Muste and Max Eastman.

Michael Josselson Papers, 1914-1991 (bulk 1960-1978).
Correspondence, clippings, typescripts, holograph manuscripts, research notes, photocopies, reports, printed materials, photographs, financial records, personal records, and maps document the professional and literary endeavors of Michael Josselson from his early adulthood in the late 1920s through his death in 1978, and continuing up to 1991 with related materials collected after his death. The majority of the papers date from the early 1960s forward. The Barclay de Tolly series contains the largest amount of material and consists mainly of typescript and holograph drafts, research notes, and extensive photocopies of bibliographic materials used by Josselson during research for his book The Commander: A Life of Barclay de Tolly. The majority of materials were created or collected by Josselson during the 1970s. Multiple drafts found in this series show extensive revisions to the work and include outlines and bibliographies. Correspondence is present throughout the papers, but is concentrated in the Personal Series and the Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) Series. The Personal Series consists mainly of outgoing letters from Josselson covering a wide range of topics, including the CCF and his book. Incoming correspondence is found mostly in CCF series as are large amounts of news clippings and printed materials.
