The Office of Henry Ford and Clara Ford Estate records series, 1832-1955, Acc. 587, constitutes a history not only of the wrapping up of Henry and Clara Ford's estates after their deaths, but also of Henry and Clara's personal interests and business, including Henry Ford's numerous projects outside of Ford Motor Company. Consisting primarily of the records of property and other business transactions--tax returns, deeds, titles, abstracts, purchase records, property descriptions, rental agreements, and vouchers--to name just a few, the records series also includes files on some of the Fords' more personal interests, such as Henry's old-fashioned dances and Clara's purchases of books and clothing. The records, maintained during the dissolution of the estate after Clara's death, also include Henry Ford's personal correspondence, some Ford Motor Company documentation, materials on the Edison Institute schools, the Ford cemetery, and limited information on select people employed by Henry Ford. The Office of Henry Ford and Clara Ford Estate records series consists of three subseries: the Campsall and Waddell Office Files subseries; the Special Folders, Office of Henry Ford subseries; and the Estate of Henry Ford, Deceased subseries. The Campsall and Waddell Office Files subseries consists of various files kept by personal secretaries Frank Campsall and later H. R. Waddell on Henry and Clara's personal business; travel preparations for Henry and Clara and trips made on their behalf; general and topical files (including book collecting, cars donated, old-fashioned dance parties, the Ford Cemetery, and Henry and Clara's funeral services); state and federal tax documents; and clippings regarding Frank Campsall's death. The Special Folders, Office of Henry Ford subseries also contains files on trips undertaken by or for Henry and Clara Ford; workers; general interests and activities of Henry Ford, including purchase papers for one of his yachts; financial dealings; and real estate. The Chronological Income Cards subsubseries consist of lists of workers involved in Henry Ford's personal projects, primarily Wayside Inn and Georgia and Michigan properties. Significant within the Real Estate subsubseries is a card file of Dearborn Realty and Construction Company properties. The Estate of Henry Ford, Deceased subseries is made up of the files of personal secretary H. R. Waddell dealing with probate and estate liquidation; several subsubseries dealing with Georgia properties, primarily Richmond Hill; various financial subsubseries which include bank books, cancelled checks, vouchers, and account books, tax receipts and tax correspondence, and a very small sampling of the real estate records of Ford's agent, William T. Gregory. The Account Books subsubseries contains financial information for many of Henry Ford's interests and activities, including Dearborn Realty & Construction Company, D. P. Lapham Bank, Dearborn Water Works, and Quirk Farms. The Card Files subsubseries consists of various sets of index cards having to do with real estate, various purchases, and employee information, often directly referencing or providing a key to other files already found throughout the collection. The Lapham-Ford subsubseries concerns Ford and his agents' dealings with David P. and Samuel Lapham, two Dearborn bankers and businessmen whose bank and many other of their assets were transferred to Henry Ford as payment of debts owed, including properties forming the Molony subdivision (variously spelled Malony, Maloney, Molony, and Moloney), its predecessor the Military Reservation (the former Detroit Arsenal grounds), and what was to become the Dearborn Country Club.

Title: Employee account records series, 1930-1944.

The Employee Account records series is organized into seven subseries. The Case Name File subseries, 1930-1944 (6 cubic ft.), contains files about employees who received assistance from the Sociological Department. The files are divided into two subsubseries: Active and Inactive Accounts. An employee file may include departmental communications, correspondence regarding delinquent bills, tax statments, receipts, land titles, deeds, insurance policies, land contracts or wage deduction forms. The Dearborn School Milk Case records subseries, 1931-1936 (1.2 cubic ft.), contains investigation reports which list the persons name, address, condition of home, employment history, names of family members, assets, liabilities, insurance, and any investigator comments. The Federal Housing Administration subseries, 1939-1941 (0.8 cubic ft.), contains correspondence and building supply estimates regarding employees who applied for FHA modernization loans. The Inkster Home Maintenance and Improvement surveys, 1939-1940 (2.4 cubic ft.), contain photographs and a corresponding written report documenting home improvements made to home in Inkster, Michigan. Also included are E.D. Brown's files on Inkster School District No. 7. The Investigations subseries, 1931-1940 (2.4 cubic ft.), contains investigation reports and attached departmental communications documenting the same personal information as the Dearborn school milk case investigation reports. The Personnel subseries, 1933-1941 (0.4 cubic ft.), contains letters from former employees and other people who want employment; and departmental correspondence between the Disbursement Department, Sociological Department and Harry Bennett. The Name Index subseries, ca. 1930s (2 card files), contains several partial card indexes to employees living in Dearborn Township, Detroit, Garden City, Inkster and St. Clair Shores who received assistance from the Sociological Department. Most subseries records are arranged alphabetically by last name.

The collection is comprised of ten loose-leaf binder photograph albums. Three are entitled Ford Close-ups. Two of the Ford Close-ups albums feature Edsel Ford; one has Henry Ford inscribed in the lower right corner. The latter is comprised of sixty-four photographic caricatures of Henry, Edsel, and key Ford Motor Company executives and associates (mostly unidentified); the others are photographs of varying sizes and quality, some of which have been trimmed. Also included is an Edsel Bryant Ford chronology through 1943. About half of the photographs have an associated caption. Seven albums are entitled Strictly Personal and are numbered 20, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30. Four of the Strictly Personal albums have Edsel Ford inscribed on the lower right corner of the cover; the fifth is not so identified but also primarily contains images of Edsel, half of which are captioned. Two Strictly Personal albums (20 and 26) are inscribed Mrs. Henry Ford. All of the albums feature Henry, Clara and Edsel Ford as they appeared in public both formally and informally. Some of the images reflect roles and functions relating to the Ford Motor Company; others show the Fords with various family members and friends, mostly at community events. There are a significant number of photographs of Henry and Edsel together.

The Ford Division (Ford Motor Company) records subgroup is organized into five series. The Tom Lilley records series, 1947-1950 (2.4 cubic ft.), Acc. 472, contains correspondence, cost analysis reports, meeting minutes, presentation reports, and working papers from the office of Tom Lilley, manager of the Financial Analysis Department of Ford Division. The Public Relations records series, 1946-1961 (4.6 cubic ft.), Acc. 471, 669, 871, is organized into three subseries. The Holmes Brown records subseries, 1953-1955 (9 cubic ft.), Acc. 746, contains clippings, correspondence, Ward's Automotive Reports, and a survey on news reports during March 1955. The clippings are from Detroit area newspapers such as the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News, major national newspapers such as the New York Post, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post; and major magazines such as Automotive News, Business Week, and U.S. News and World Report. The clippings cover a wide variety of topics related to the automobile industry such as auto shows, union activitiy, and production rates. They cover events at American Motors, Chrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and other domestic automobile companies. Thecorrespondence is incoming correspondence to Holmes Brown from regional public relations managers. The Jack W. Clarke records subseries, 1946-1952 (3.2 cubic ft.), Acc. 471, contains correspondence and press releases regarding sales branches and assembly plants; and subject files regarding manager meetings, business reports, and regional public relations activities from the office of Jack W. Clarke, public relations manager of Ford Division. The Press Previews subseries, 1961 (0.2 cubic ft.), Acc. 871, contains speeches, news releases, and other background information about the Ford Division 1962 Model Press Preview in August, 1961. The Subject Files subseries, 1950-1956 (1.2 cubic ft.), Acc. 669, contains newspaper clippings about Harry Bennett; correspondence regarding Ford Motor Company's defense production during the Korean War; correspondence and photographs regarding the Henry Ford International Highway, formerly known as International 87 Highway spanning from Alaska to Central America; and correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, and press releases regarding new Ford Motor Company plants in Atlanta, Georgia; Lorain, Ohio; Louisville, Kentucky; Mahwah, New Jersey; Milpitas, Virginia; and San Jose, California. The F. C. Reith records series, 1949-1952 (0.8 cubic ft.), Acc. 569, contains departmental communications, reports, incoming and outgoing correspondence of F. C. (Jack) Reith, manager of the Product and Facility Programming Department of Ford Division. Topics include budgets, industrial relations, market research, modernization of assembly plants, passenger car prices, production, relocation of district sales offices, tooling alterations, truck prices, and other department projects.
